LE HAVRE, France - With a 2-0 win over Sweden on Thursday, former William & Mary women's soccer standout Jill Ellis '88 and the United States Women's National Team won Group F and advanced to the knockout stages of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. The US cruised through its group as it didn't allow a goal, and set a World Cup record with 18 goals scored. Previously, the USA had topped Thailand 13-0 and a 3-0 victory over Chile in Group F.
The USA will play on Monday, June 24 against the second-place finisher from Group B, Spain in the Round of 16. The match will be played at Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims, France. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m., EST and will be televised on FOX Sports 1. The winner of that game advances to play the winner of France and Brazil in the Quarterfinals on Friday, June 28.
Originally from Portsmouth, England, Ellis played forward for the Tribe from 1984-87. She finished her career with 32 goals, 19 assists, and ranks ninth in career points with 83, while earning Third Team All-America honors during her senior season. She helped the Tribe to the NCAA tournament all four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 1987. Ellis earned her degree from William and Mary in English Literature and Composition.
