Campbell Outlasts Women's Soccer, 1-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — William & Mary women's soccer and Campbell battled hard on Thursday at Eakes Athletics Complex in Buies Creek, N.C., but it was Campbell who came out on top 1-0.

The match marked the first loss of the conference season for William & Mary, falling to 1-1-2.

The decisive goal came directly off a free kick from the right wing in the second half, as the Camels capitalized on the set piece. Both squads battled hard for possession throughout the 90 minutes with the defenses able to bend but not break. The Tribe managed 13 total shots but could not convert.

William & Mary began the first half by applying early pressure before the Camels got into the act. Goalkeeper Gwen Doughty made a crucial save in the opening minutes to maintain the 0-0 scoreline.

As the half progressed, the Green and Gold generated opportunities, including a shot by Ivey Crain in the 20th minute, which was saved by Campbell's goalkeeper. Mia Abbey also tested the Camels' defense with a shot that went off target in the 26th minute.

With Campbell often looking to counter, W&M managed to keep the game level heading into halftime, with the score tied at 0-0.

The second half began with the Tribe maintaining offensive pressure, with Lindsay Wilson taking an early shot just after the restart. The team continued to press forward, generating several opportunities, including shots from Crain and Ava Schultz. Brooke Oswald's attempt in the 64th minute found the target but was steered away.

As the half progressed, William & Mary handled multiple set pieces, with corner kicks at the 58th, 73rd, and 83rd minutes, reflecting their continued efforts to break through Campbell's defense.

Despite the aggressive offensive play, the Camels managed to score in the 88th minute, taking a 1-0 lead. The half closed with the Green and Gold pushing for an equalizer but the score remained 1-0 at the final whistle.

Doughty played a crucial role in goal, recording four saves over 90 minutes. Crain led the offensive effort with four shots, one of which was on target. Wilson contributed to the attack by taking two shots.

In their next game, the Tribe will host Charleston on October 5. The match is set for noon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
