WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's soccer defeated Charleston 1-0 on Sunday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
The Tribe secured the victory with a second-half goal from
Ivey Crain, despite being outshot 21-9. The Green and Gold's defense was pivotal, with
Gwen Doughty making six saves to preserve the shutout.
The match began with both teams vying for control in the first half. William & Mary's Crain tested the Cougars' goalkeeper early, but her effort was saved. The Tribe maintained offensive pressure with multiple attempts from Crain, while Doughty made key saves to keep the match scoreless.
CoC had several chances, including a shot that hit the top woodwork, but W&M's defensive efforts ensured the half ended with neither side finding the net.
The second half began with a significant moment for William & Mary as Crain netted a goal in the 73rd minute, putting the home team ahead 1-0.
The breakthrough came after a period of defensive resilience, with Doughty making saves against several attempts from Charleston. W&M maintained their lead through the end of the half, withstanding pressure from the visitors and concluding the match with a 1-0 victory.
Doughty recorded six saves and secured a shutout in the match. Crain scored the only goal of the game, adding to her season total (4) and securing the win. Crain also led the Green and Gold with six shots, two of which were on goal.
The next challenge for the Tribe takes them on the road to Wilmington, N.C., where they will face UNCW on October 11. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
