The William & Mary baseball team advanced to the CAA Tournament winner's bracket final with a 1-0 in 14 innings over No. 2-seeded College of Charleston on Thursday night. The Tribe now squares off with No. 5 seed UNCW, which advanced to the game after knocking off regular-season champ Elon, on Friday, May 24. First pitch between the Tribe and the Seahawks is set for 7 p.m.
- Senior
Owen Socher delivered a clutch two-out RBI single and a quartet of William & Mary pitchers combined for a shutout. In the end, the Tribe outlasted Charleston, 1-0, in the longest game in Colonial Athletic Association Championship history late Thursday night at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The teams traded zeroes for 13 innings as both pitching staffs turned in gems before W&M (33-20) finally broke through. In the top of the 14th, freshman
Jack Cone led off the frame with a single through the left side. He moved up to second on a
Matt McDermott sacrifice and to third on a ground out to shortstop. Socher provided the big blow punching an 0-1 pitch through the right side for the game's run.
- The Tribe and Seahawks meet for the 103rd time in series history on Friday night in Harrisonburg. The Seahawks lead the all-time series 73-29, including a 6-5 advantage in 11 CAA Tournament meetings. This season, the Tribe swept a three-game series at Brooks Field. In the series, senior
Zach Pearson led the Tribe with a .385 (5-for-13) batting average, adding a double and four RBI. Both senior
Owen Socher and freshman
Hunter Hart hit .333 over the weekend. Freshman pitcher
Zach Tsakounis, who will make the start today, went six innings, scattering just six hits with four strikeouts.
- Junior
Matthew Trehub has led the Tribe offense so far throughout the tournament going 3-for-7. Both senior
Owen Socher and freshman
Jack Cone have also collected three hits so far in the tournament.
- W&M has advanced this far because of its pitching and defense. Moreover, the Tribe bullpen has been phenomenal. The trio of junior
Chris Farrell and sophomores
Randy Prosperi and
Justin Pearson have combined to pitch 8.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just four hits, while striking out seven hitters.
- With one more win, W&M will advance to its fifth CAA Championship game in program history. The previous four have all come since 2001, and the Tribe won the title in 2001 and 2016. It would also be the fourth time since 2013 that the Tribe has advanced to the title game.
- The Green and Gold played its fourth extra inning contest this season, as it played the longest game in CAA Baseball Tournament history on Thursday night. The Tribe has won three extra frame games in a row, all over Charleston, to go 3-1 in extras this season. Head coach
Brian Murphy is now 14-13 in extra inning contests during his Tribe tenure.
- Both of the Tribe's CAA Tournament games have been one-run affairs, which brings the season total to 17. W&M has posted an 11-6 mark in those games, including winning five of its last six one-run games.
