Phil Breno Inks Professional Deal with the Charleston Battery

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former William & Mary goalkeeper Phil Breno inked a professional contract with the Charleston Battery of the USL Championship division. Breno is the third Tribe player in the last three months to sign professionally and the 36th overall.

Breno started all 41 matches over his two seasons with the Tribe, amassing a 22-12-7 record. He ranks among the program's career leaders in shutouts (fifth with 14), goals against average (GAA) (sixth at 1.09) and saves (10th with 117).

As a senior in 2017, Breno registered a 1.04 GAA with 54 saves and seven shutouts in helping the Tribe to the CAA Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He ranked second in the CAA in shutouts and fourth in GAA. Twice in 2017, Breno totaled seven saves at College Cup Semifinalist North Carolina and in the CAA Quarterfinals at Hofstra.

After transferring to the Tribe from UMBC, Breno started all 20 games in 2016, helping the Green and Gold to the CAA Championship game. He tallied a 1.15 GAA with 63 saves, a .733 save percentage and seven shutouts as a junior. He recorded a career-high nine saves at Delaware.

The Charleston Battery is an American professional soccer club based in Charleston, S.C., and a member of the USL Championship division, the second division of U.S. Soccer. Founded in 1993, the Battery is one of the oldest continuously operating professional soccer clubs in the United States, tied with the Richmond Kickers.

Breno joins former teammates Antonio Bustamante (D.C. United in Major League Soccer) and William Eskay (Harrisburg Heat in the Major Arena Soccer League) to sign professional contracts. Breno becomes the sixth goalkeeper in program history to compete at the professional level and the seventh player under head coach Chris Norris.
