The William & Mary men's track & field team continues the spring campaign this weekend, sending a baker's dozen of athletes down to the Raleigh Relays. Action in the North Carolina state capitol begins on Friday, March 29, at 10 a.m. with the discus, and concludes with the hammer throw on Saturday, March 30, at 1:30 p.m. Live results will be available for the meet on TribeAthletics.com.
Among the competitors this week is reigning Colonial Athletic Association Track Athlete of the Week
Miles Owens (Yorktown, Va.), who will run the 1,500m. Owens ran an IC4A-qualifier last week in the 800m, and will try to make it a matched set in the middle-distances this week. This will be just his third 1,500m race in college, and on the anniversary of setting his best-time of 3:54.71 a year ago. In the 400m, both
Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.) and
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.) ran outdoor-best times last week at home, and will be attempting to break the 49-second barrier this week to lock up an IC4A bid. Only 12 men in school history have achieved that feat, including just four in the last 20 years. In the 5,000m, redshirt-freshmen
Micah Pratt (Lynchburg, Va.) and
Evan Goodell (St. Louis, Mich.) will run in the morning heats, while senior
Ryan McGorty (Fairfax, Va.) competes on Friday night. The underclassmen ran this race two weeks ago at home, timing 14:54 and 14:58, respectively, while McGorty has a best of 14:18 from last season. A slight improvement on his part should put McGorty in contention for the NCAA East Regional in May, which will likely take a time of 14:17 or better.
In the field events, sophomore
Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) competes in the pole vault, a week after winning the event at the Dan Stimson Memorial Meet. He cleared an outdoor-best 4.83m (15-10) to earn the win, and has a personal-best from indoors this year of 4.90m (16-0.75). In the throws, the Tribe line-up includes freshman
Troy Yearwood (Chesapeake, Va.), the reigning CAA Field Athlete of the Week. Yearwood set a big lifetime-best last week in the discus, throwing 52.35m (171-9) to move into fourth in school history and into likely NCAA Regional-qualifying range. He's entered in the discus again this week as well as the shot put, alongside teammates
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.),
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.), and
Vlad Castillo, Jr. (Belle Mead, N.J.). Richardson has a likely NCAA mark in the discus himself, and like Scott is qualified for IC4A Championships in both events. Sophomore
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) is entered in both the shot and the discus, as well as the hammer throw where he's set lifetime-bests each of the last two weeks. Cook is qualified for the IC4A meet in all three throws. Also in the hammer is sophomore
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.), after setting a lifetime-best and IC4A-qualifier two weeks ago.
