Women's Tennis Falls to No. 42 Rice

PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Charlotte Madson won her third-straight singles match, but William & Mary suffered a 6-1 setback to No. 42-ranked Rice on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
- The Owls (10-7) opened with a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. After a 6-2 Rice win at the No. 3 spot, the No. 57-ranked duo of Anastasia Smirnova and Priya Niezgoda edged junior Natalia Perry and freshman Mila Saric, 6-4, on line two to clinch the initial point of the match. The setback snapped a two-match win streak for Perry and Saric.
- At the top doubles post, senior Clara Tanielian and sophomore Vitoria Okuyama were locked in a 5-5 match with the No. 52-ranked duo of Michaela Haet and Linda Huang when the match was abandoned with the doubles point decided. Tanielian and Okuyama are 6-1 on the year and 5-1 at No. 1.
- Rice pulled out a trio of tiebreaker first sets at the bottom three spots and won at the top three singles spots to clinch the team victory. Victoria Smirnova notched the Owl's fourth tiebreaker set of the match, downing junior Rosie Cheng, 6-2, 7-6 (3), at No. 2 to clinch the team triumph.
- At No. 6, Madson rallied for a three-set victory in winning her third-straight match. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker to Diae El Jardi, the Tribe junior bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second. With the team result decided, Madson topped El Jardi in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-3. She won her ninth match of the season, improving to 7-6 in dual-match play.
