The William & Mary men's cross country team turned in one of its strongest performances of recent years on Friday, finishing fourth at the Penn State National Open and upsetting five more highly-ranked teams. The Tribe scored 123 points with five runners in the top-50, while Temple won the 11-team event with 56 points ahead of Penn (71) and host Penn State (76). The 5.2 mile course is roughly a quarter-mile (400m) longer than the NCAA-standard 8K race for the regular season.
How it Happened
- For the Tribe, the top performance was turned in yet again by redshirt-junior
JP Trojan (Chardon, Ohio), pulling away over the last half of the race to win the 5.2 mile event in 25:16.0. Trojan's win was his second of the year, and third top-two finish in three races as he continued to establish himself as a runner to watch on the national stage. Trojan finished 18 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, and is the first W&M runner to win at this event since Hall-of-Famer
Sean Graham '03 back in 2001.
- Next across the line was junior
Spencer Tsai (Eugene, Ore.) in 26:00.9 for 21st overall, continuing his streak of finishing second for the Tribe in every race this season.
- Redshirt-sophomore
Evan Goodell (St. Louis, Mich.) was close behind Tsai in 26:05.9 for 26th overall, and senior
Cooper Leslie (Camp Hill, Pa.) was 37th overall in 26:20.3.
- The final scorer for W&M was redshirt-sophomore
Patrick Lynch (Vienna, Va.), who flashed across the finish in 26:26.8 to take 42nd overall.
- Rounding out the varsity line-up were two more redshirt-sophomores,
Jack Mackey (Alexandria, Va.) and
John Cacciatore (Indialantic, Fla.). Mackey ran 27:15.4 and finished 75th, while Cacciatore stopped the clock in 82nd overall with a time of 27:21.9.
