W&M Field Hockey Names 2018 Captains at Year-End Banquet

The William & Mary field hockey officially wrapped up the 2017-18 season last weekend, hosting the year-end banquet and an alumni tournament.  In addition to recognizing the Tribe's many award-winners from the 2017 season, several major team awards and next year's captains were announced at the banquet as well.

Among the awards given out was the Offensive MVP, won this year by Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.).  MacLeod had a career-best season on the field, and led the Tribe with 11 goals and four assists.  That included a school record-tying four goals in a single game against Hofstra.  MacLeod was also named first-team All-CAA, first-team All-State, and second-team all-region earlier this postseason.

Winning Defensive MVP honors was Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.).  A four-year starter for the Tribe, Ellis was named second-team All-State and second-team All-CAA for the third year in a row.  She scored a team-high six assists this season, and had the game-winning goal against Old Dominion and a defensive save in the win over Northeastern.

Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) was named Most Improved, after back-stopping the Tribe to a 13-7 record and its first appearance in the CAA Championship game since 2002.  She cut her GAA by 0.75 (1.74) and upped her save percentage by the same amount (89 stops on a .730 percentage) compared to her freshman year, while winning the fourth-most games in a season in school history (13).  Connor's year included three shutouts and a career-high 14 saves against Boston College, en route to second-team All-State honors.

Redshirt-junior Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) was named the winner of the Unsung Hero award, voted by her teammates as the player who's contributions far outweighed her recognition from outside sources.  That should give some idea of the importance of Hughes' play, as she was named to both the All-CAA and All-State second teams this season.  She ranked fourth on the team with 15 points, coming on six goals and three assists, including a two-goal and two-assist effort in the record-breaking win over La Salle.

Also announced at the banquet were the Tribe's captains for the upcoming 2018 season.  Voted by their teammates to the leadership post were rising senior Jenny McCann (Annandale, Va.) and rising junior Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.).  McCann appeared in all 20 games last year as a forward, including three starts, and scored two goals and an assist.  Her scores came in the win against La Salle, and the CAA Semifinal upset of #15 James Madison to tie the match at 1-1.  van de Kamp, meanwhile, started all 20 matches in the defensive line and ranked fifth on the team with 10 points.  She scored three goals on the year and four assists, including the game-winner against Northeastern as well as tallies over Davidson and La Salle.  Her assists came twice against Pacific, as well as against Hofstra and Drexel.  Van de Kamp was named to the CAA All-Tournament team this season, and is also a member of the Team USA U21 Junior National Team for 2017-18.
