The William & Mary men's track & field team broke three records on Saturday at the Dan Stimson Memorial Quad meet, and won 26 of 57 possible races en route to an 0-2-1 overall record. The Tribe tied George Mason 88-88, before falling in a narrow battle with Buffalo 91-84 and to Navy, 118-68. The Midshipmen went 3-0 in the meet, while the Patriots were 1-1-1 and the Bulls 1-2.
- Two of the records broken now belong to freshman
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Calif.), who broke W&M's rookie marks in both the discus and the hammer. He was the overall winner in the discus, beating all three opponents in the final event with a throw of 51.20m (168-0). That was an IC4A qualifier and the 14th-longest single throw in school history, and now ranks Cook third all-time among Tribe athletes. His classmate
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.) also earned another IC4A qualifier, throwing 48.85m (160-3). That improved him to seventh all-time at W&M.
- In the hammer, grad student
Tom Parker (Otford, Kent, England) stayed undefeated this spring with the win at 62m flat (203-5), the 11th-longest throw in school history. Meanwhile, Cook's second freshman record came with a throw of 52.01m (170-8), and improved him to 10th all-time among Tribe athletes. Fellow rookie
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) threw 51.20m (168-0), improving to 12th all-time at W&M.
- Over on the track, junior
Ryan McGorty (Fairfax, Va.) lopped more than 13 seconds off his personal-best at 3,000m, smashing the Zable Stadium record and beating all comers with the win in 8:13.16. That was the fifth-fastest outdoor 3,000m in school history, and ranks McGorty fourth all-time on the athletes list, behind only multiple-time All-Americans
Matt Lane '01,
Ed Moran '03 MPP '05, and
Christo Landry '08.
- Also collecting a sweep of all three opposing teams was senior
Jared Sinsheimer (Federal Way, Wash.), who won the long jump on his first attempt at 6.77m (22-2.5).
- In the 1,500m, senior
Dawson Connell (Yorktown, Va.) claimed the overall win and three victories in an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:51.38.
- Freshman
Miles Owens (Yorktown, Va.) also qualified for IC4As, running 1:51.62 in the 800m. That was also good enough to claim the overall win and victories over all three schools.
- Winning two out of three was redshirt-sophomore
Connor Atkinson (Ashburn, Va.), who ran 49.33 in the 400m to beat out both Buffalo and George Mason. That also improved him to 13th all-time at W&M in the event.
- In the javelin, redshirt-junior
Derek Trott (Old Bridge, N.J.) qualified for the IC4A Championships, throwing 60.10m (197-2). That was better than all opponents from Buffalo and George Mason.
- His classmate
Dylan Anderson (Madison, N.J.) also qualified for the IC4A meet, in his case in the 110m hurdles. Anderson ran 14.86 into a stiff headwind, finishing ahead of all of his opponents from Buffalo.
- The final individual win of the day came in the shot put, where junior
Vlad Castillo, Jr. (Belle Mead, N.J.) put the shot 15.32m (50-3.25) to finish ahead of anyone from George Mason.
- W&M had two strong performances in the relays as well. In the 4x400m relay, the team of Anderson, Atkinson, Owens, and
Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Marshall, Va.) ran 3:16.78 to finish second overall and qualify for the IC4A Championships. They beat both Buffalo and George Mason in the race.
- In the 4x100m relay, the Tribe ran 42.44 to qualify for the IC4A Championships, and ran the fastest race since the 1990 season. That is the 10th-fastest performance all-time, and came on the strength of
Davion Hutt (King George, Va.), Anderson, Atkinson, and
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.).
William & Mary hits the road next weekend for the first time this spring, competing at the Raleigh Relays Thursday-Saturday, May 29-31.
