Estelle Hughes Earns Pair of Third-Team All-American Honors

William & Mary redshirt-senior Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) became W&M's 11th field hockey All-American Tuesday, after earning third-team honors from both the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and from SynapseSports.com.  Hughes is the first for the Tribe to be named All-American since 2005, when Anna Davis '05 was named to the womensfieldhockey.com First-Team; and the first Longstreth/NFHCA All-American since 2004 when Kelly Giles '06 also earned third-team honors.

Hughes was honored after a spectacular season which saw W&M win the CAA Championship and an NCAA Tournament game for the first time ever.  She led the Tribe in scoring with 32 points, on 13 points and six assists, and scored four game-winning goals, all career-bests.  Hughes' season began with two goals and an assist against Lafayette, and then the very next game she scored her first career hat trick against Brown, including the winner in double-overtime.  That same weekend, Hughes also scored a goal and an assist against VCU, en route to CAA Player of the Week honors.

The senior next scored goals in back-to-back games against No. 2 Connecticut and in the road overtime win against Northeastern, and assisted on the game-winner at Hofstra.  Hughes also had assists against Pacific and No. 18 Delaware, and then went on a tear through the final game of the regular season and the post-season.  At James Madison, Hughes scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, and then had the game-winners in each of the two CAA Tournament games as well.  She scored the first and winning goal in the semifinal shutout of Northeastern, and then in the CAA Championship recap against No. 14 Delaware, she assisted on the Tribe's first goal of the game to tie the match 1-1, and then scored the game-winner in overtime to give W&M it's first-ever conference title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Next was the NCAA Opening Round game against Monmouth, where her 13th final goal of the year in the 66th minute sent the game to overtime and gave the Tribe the momentum to head on to the victory.

The two All-American awards add to Hughes' season, which has already included first-team All-CAA, all-region, and CAA Most Outstanding Player of the Championships.  Her 32 points on the year is tied for 11th all-time at W&M and ranked her second in the CAA, while her four game-winning goals is also tied for 11th in school history and tied for the conference lead.  Hughes also led the CAA in goals this season with 13, which is tied for 15th-most in a single season in school history.  Hughes' career finished with 26 goals (t-14th all-time at W&M), 15 assists (t-13th), 67 points (14th), and six game-winning goals.  She ranks tied for ninth all-time at W&M in game-winning goals, as well as 11th all-time in both points per game (1.06) and assists per game (0.24).  Her goals per game of 0.41 ranks 12th in Tribe history.
