WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 4, 2017) – The William & Mary women's gymnastics team earned its second-best score of the season but was edged by North Carolina, 194.075 – 192.875, on Senior Day at Kaplan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
No more than 0.25 separated the teams' scores in three of the four events during the closely contested matchup.
Both of W&M's seniors –
Briana Gironda and
Olivia O'Connor – posted impressive senior day performances to lead the Tribe. Gironda claimed the individual all-around title (38.750) and tied for first on beam (9.850), while O'Connor earned a share of the bars title (9.775) and placed second in all-around (38.650).
W&M opened the meet on vault and registered a 47.825. O'Connor recorded the team's top mark (9.650), while freshman
Caroline Caponi totaled a 9.625.
O'Connor's winning effort on bars (9.775) matched her season high and helped the Green & Gold earn a 48.500. Freshman
Erika Marr also came up big and placed third with a career-best 9.750.
In the third rotation, Gironda won the beam title by equaling her career high with a 9.850. O'Connor and Caponi also contributed to the team total of 48.275.
W&M closed out the meet on floor with a 48.275, as sophomore
Aaliyah Kerr (9.750) posted the team's top mark. Gironda and freshman
Taylor White also recorded excellent efforts and tallied a pair of 9.700's, which marked a career high for White.
The Tribe will wrap up its regular-season slate when it hosts Temple at Kaplan Arena on Friday at 7 p.m.
