WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 17, 2017) – The William & Mary women's gymnastics team posted its second-best score of the season (192.725) en route to a fifth-place finish at a five-team meet hosted by No. 20 George Washington on Friday evening.
No. 22 Iowa claimed the team title with a 196.400 and was followed by GW (196.050), Maryland (195.275), Pittsburgh (194.725) and W&M (192.725).
In addition to the strong overall team performance, the Tribe posted a season-high 48.750 on floor.
Sophomore
Aaliyah Kerr highlighted W&M's individual performances by claiming a share of the floor title with a career-high 9.900. The outstanding score ranks tied for fifth in school history in the event.
The Tribe opened the meet on beam, as seniors
Olivia O'Connor (9.700) and
Briana Gironda (9.675) helped the squad total a 47.975.
W&M then moved to floor where Kerr's winning effort was pivotal in helping the team secure a season-best 48.750 in the event. Gironda also came up big with a 9.775.
After a bye in the evening's third rotation, W&M tallied a 47.600 on vault. Freshman
Erika Marr tied for eighth overall with a career-high 9.750, while sophomore
Katie Webber totaled a 9.725.
The College closed out the meet with a 48.400 on bars, as Gironda equaled a season high (9.800) and Marr and classmate
Taylor White both matched career bests with a 9.725.
Gironda was the squad's top all-arounder and placed fifth with a season-high 38.800, while O'Connor also competed in all four events (38.500).
The Tribe will return to action when it competes in a quad meet hosted by Maryland on Sunday at 2 p.m. In addition to the Terps, the competition will include No. 9 Kentucky and Penn.
