RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary junior
Antonio Bustamante was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, the league announced on Thursday, headlining a group of six Tribe honorees.
Bustamante was a First Team All-CAA pick for the second-straight season, and classmate
Ryder Bell garnered first-team honors as well. The Tribe was one of four CAA teams, along with Hofstra, UNCW and Charleston, to have two first-team selections.
Senior
William Eskay and junior
Marcel Berry received All-CAA Second Team nods, and senior
Riley Spain earned a place on the third team. The Tribe's five All-CAA selections were second in the CAA behind UNCW's seven. It marked the 10th time in program history that W&M had five All-CAA honorees. Freshman
Sam Golan rounded out the group as the program's 16th CAA All-Rookie Team selection.
Bustamante, who was recently named the
Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week following his record-setting four-goal outburst at Hofstra on Nov. 4, leads the CAA in goals (12) and points (29). He is the sixth CAA Player of the Year in program history and the first since 2009, joining a list that includes Ricky Dahan (1987), Jon Tuttle (1988), Waughn Hughes (1996), Wade Barrett (1997) and Andrew Hoxie (2009).
He ranks among the national top 25 in points (10th), goals (13th), goals per game (19th at 0.67) and points per game (22nd at 1.61). He has scored in nine of the Tribe's last 13 games and owns 20 points on eight goals and four assists over the last seven contests. Bustamante, who was twice named the CAA Player of the Week on Sept. 18 and Oct. 9, is the 16th multiple time First Team All-CAA selection in W&M history and the first since Nathaniel Baako in 2010. He joins a select group of former Tribe players that includes head coach
Chris Norris.
Bell, who was a Second Team All-CAA pick, garnered a spot on the league's top team as a junior after ranking among the league leaders in points, goals and assists. He led the league with seven assists to go along with ranking second in points (19) and fourth in goals (6). Bell garnered CAA Player of the Week honors on Oct. 23 after tallying two goals and two assists in the Tribe's 4-1 win over Virginia Tech. He tallied two goals and four assists in CAA play.
Berry and Eskay joined Bustamante as three-time all-league honorees with their second-team awards. It marked the third-straight year that Berry received second-team honors, while Eskay moved up to the second team after being a third-team choice in the previous two seasons. Bustamante, Berry and Eskay pushed the number of three-time All-CAA honorees to 18 in program history, including seven under Norris.
Berry started all 18 matches for the Tribe along the backline, finishing with a goal and two assists. He scored the game-winning goal in handing Hofstra its lone regular season league setback on Oct. 14. Eskay ranks among the top 10 in the CAA in points (eighth) and assists (second). He owns 11 points on three goals and five assists in 2017.
Spain received the first All-CAA accolade of his Tribe career. The Green and Gold's team Most Valuable Player in 2016, he started all 16 of his appearances this season and all 71 of his four-year career. A strong ball-winner and a driving force in the midfield, Spain's impact is far greater than his stat line. He owns a pair of assists on the year.
Golan was named to the league's All-Rookie Team. It marks the fifth-straight season in which a W&M player was named to the rookie team. After appearing in his first collegiate game as a reserve, Golan started the last 17 matches along the back line. He was twice named the CAA Rookie of the Week this season. Golan notched his first collegiate goal in the opening half against UNCW on Sept. 23.
The Tribe enters the CAA semifinals on an eight-match unbeaten steak (5-0-3) and is 9-4-5 on the year. W&M, which is ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region rankings, travels to CAA regular season champion James Madison for the second of two league semifinals on Friday night.
