W&M Women's Swimming Set for Road Contest at VMI Saturday

The William & Mary women's swimming team heads to Lexington, Va., on Saturday to swim VMI in the final dual meet of the fall semester.  The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Keydets' Clark King Pool.

The Meet
The two teams will compete in an abbreviated 13-event format, which is really just 11 swimming events.  In addition to the standard five freestyle events (50,100, 200, 500, and 1,000), the teams will also swim the 200s of the three other strokes and the 100 IM.  The two relays will be the 400 medley relay, and finishing off with the 200 free relay.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M went 2-1 at the CAA Pod Meet last weekend, and came within half a second of the sweep to improve to 6-2 (3-1 CAA) for the season.  The Tribe beat host UNCW 176-171 and Delaware 239-108, while falling to JMU 180-167 in a meet that came down to the very last relay.  Junior Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) was dominant in the meet, going 7-2 in her three events, sweeping both the 1,650 free and the 400 IM while finishing third to JMU and second to UNCW in the 500 free.  Her times in the 1650 (17:23.62) and the 400 IM (4:30.70) are both tops in the CAA this year and are in-season bests for the junior, who also set a collegiate-best 54.87 in the 100 free while leading off W&M's "C" 400 free relay.  For the season, Smith leads the Tribe with 11 individual victories, while classmate Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) leads the points list with 144 (18.0 points per meet average).

Scouting the Keydets
VMI enters the weekend at 0-3 overall, with two losses to Mount St. Mary's and the third to Howard.  The thin Keydets squad (just 14 swimmers) is led by Isabel French, in the breast/IM, as well as by distance ace MoMo Davis and sprinter Natalie Rivas.

The Series
Last year's 166-44 win for W&M in Williamsburg was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Notes
This will be the first time that W&M has swum the 100 IM since last year against Delaware ... Current senior Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.) set the school record in the rare event in that meet, timing 59.54 ... This is VMI's first home meet since January of 2015, and will also be Senior Day for the Keydets ... At 6-2 on the year, this is W&M's best start to the year since the 2009-10 team also began 6-2 en route to a 7-4 finish ... If the Tribe can get to 7-2, it'll be the best start since 2008-09 when W&M began and ended with losses, but bridged the two with a 10-match winning streak ... W&M's two wins last weekend lifted head coach Matt Crispino '02 into a tie for the all-time women's program record at W&M with 77 career wins ... In the midst of his 11th season, Crispino has matched the total put up by Christine Jackson between 1969-82 ... The Tribe has already matched the team's win total from the last two years (identical 6-5 marks) ... In addition to Smith's two CAA-best times, W&M also leads the conference in two more events ... Senior Shannon Harrington (Philadelphia, Pa.) leads the league in the 200 IM, and junior Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has the best time in the 200 fly.
