Tribe Assistant Dominic Pagon Leads Jamaica in Davis Cup

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary men's tennis assistant coach Dominic Pagon recently competed for Jamaica in the Davis Cup. Along with competing in doubles during the Americas Zone Group III in La Paz, Bolivia, Pagon was named the Jamaican captain prior to the event.

At the Club de Tennis La Paz, July 11-16, Pagon posted a 2-1 mark in doubles, teaming with Rowland Phillips. Jamaica finished second in Pool A with a 2-1 mark, before falling in the playoff round. In Pool play, Jamaica defeated both Cuba and Panama by 3-0 scores, before falling to Pool winner Bolivia. Pagon and Phillips downed Cuba's Alejandro Benitez and Brendan Cockburn, 6-0, 6-1, before rallying for a three-set win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Osmel Rivera Granja and Cristian Rodriguez of Panama.

After posting a 2-1 Pool A mark in round-robin action, Jamaica faced off with Pool B winner Bahamas to earn promotion to the Americas Zone Group II in 2017. Unfortunately for Pagan and Jamaica, Bahamas pulled out a 2-0 victory to advance in the Davis Cup. It marked the seventh time in his career that Pagon was selected to the Jamaican Davis Cup team. He owns a 9-6 doubles mark in Davis Cup play and 15 wins overall. Pagon is not stranger to competing internationally for Jamaica, having also taken part in the Pan-American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Pagon, who graduated from W&M in 2009 with a degree in economics, returned to his alma mater last year as an assistant coach. He helped guide the Tribe to its first national ranking in five years and a final mark of 15-9. During his playing career with the Tribe, Pagon was a three-time All-CAA honoree, helping the Tribe to final national rankings and 16-win campaigns during his final three seasons.

The Tribe welcomes back eight of its top nine players from a squad that was ranked as high as No. 60 last season. W&M opens the fall season at the Penn Fall Invitational, Sept. 16-18.
