Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener 2-1 on Friday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in front of a season-high crowd 731 fans. Junior Clara Logsdon scored the Tribe's lone goal. With the decision the Tribe falls to 6-3-1, 0-1-0 in CAA play, while the Pride improves to 7-3-0, 1-0-0 in league action.
Hofstra jumped on the attack early in had a pair of shots in the first five minutes. In just the third minute, Jeannine Molleda sent a shot towards frame that was saved by senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey. Again in the fifth minute, the Pride threatened on a shot from Madeline Anderson, but once again Casey made the stop.
The Pride went up with a goal in the 11th minute. A through ball from Mallory Ullrich found Leah Galton sprinting down the sideline. Galton brought the ball to the middle of the box where she uncorked a shot into the top right corner of the goal, giving Hofstra a 1-0 lead.
W&M recorded its first shot of the night in the 20th minute. Logsdon was able to find some space and fire a shot from distance, but Friederike Mehring was there for the stop. The Green and Gold had another chance in 31st minute when sophomore Adrienne Maday sent a shot wide that rolled just past the goalline.
Hofstra started the second half just like the first with its second goal, this time just two minutes into the frame. Off of a throw-in, Kristin Desmond found the head of Jenn Buoncore, who was able to direct the ball to Galton. Galton was able to get her shot off and into the left corner of the goal, before crashing into a Tribe defender. Her second goal of the game lifted the Pride to a 2-0.
The Tribe started picking up the pressure following the second goal. Sophomore Rachel Moore was able to put a shot on target just a minute later that was saved by Mehring.
W&M was able to cut the lead to a one-goal deficit in the 61st minute. Off of a corner kick sent in by sophomore Haley Kent, the ball reached the far post. Waiting there was Logsdon, who directed the ball into he middle of the net. Her first marker of the season made the score 2-1.
Junior Haley Kavanaugh had a couple of chances for the equalizer down the stretch, but the Pride was able to hold off the final push from W&M. Kavanaugh's first chance came in the 78th minute when her shot was pushed just wide. The second chance was in the 84th minute on a header that had to be corralled by Mehring.
Hofstra finished the game with a 13-11 advantage in shots on-goal, which included an 8-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Logsdon and Kavananugh led the Tribe with three shots apiece.
Casey recorded six saves in a busy night in goal for her. With the six stops, she is now just 22 saves away from moving into second place all-time in school history.
The Tribe concludes its CAA opening home stand against two-time defending champion Northeastern on Sunday, Sept. 27. Kickoff for that match is set for 2 p.m.
