Women’s Soccer Edged at Appalachian State, 2-1

BOONE, N.C. – The William & Mary women's soccer team was edged at Appalachian State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

W&M (0-3-1) led with less than six minutes remaining, but the Mountaineers (4-1-1) scored twice in the final minutes to escape with the non-conference victory.

After a scoreless first half, W&M took the lead late in the contest when Ellie Leffler found the back of the net off an assist from Mia Abbey in the 78th minute. It was Leffler's first goal this season, while Abbey increased her team-leading point total to seven.

ASU (4-1-1) answered just a few moments later, however, as Olivia Simon's equalizer in the 85th minute knotted the contest.

Less than two minutes later Libby Bermingham provided the game-winner when she converted a penalty kick in the bottom right side of the net.

The Mountaineers outshot W&M, 17-8, which included a narrow 7-5 margin in attempts on goal.

ASU also totaled 13 of the game's 16 corner kicks.

The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Liberty at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Thursday at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on FloCollege.
