WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's soccer returns to Martin Family Stadium for its home opener Thursday, hosting Virginia Tech at 6 p.m., before traveling to Appalachian State for a 1 p.m. matchup Sunday in Boone, N.C.
The Tribe enters the week at 0-1-1 following a 1-1 draw at Loyola Maryland and a 3-2 setback at Army to open the season.
Clear Bag Policy and Metal Detectors
Furthering its commitment to a first class and secure environment at home athletic events, William & Mary has implemented the use of walk-through metal detectors at the entrances to athletic venues (both ticketed and non-ticketed events). This enhanced security method mirrors standard practice at most major professional and intercollegiate athletic events throughout the country and compliments the Clear Bag Policy already in place. Fans will proceed through metal detectors prior to having their tickets scanned or entering a venue for non-tickets events. Entrants will not need to remove items such as belts, cell phones, coins, jackets, jewelry, watches, wallets, shoes or other small objects. If additional screening is necessary, security staff will ask the individual to proceed to a secondary screening area, where they will be asked to divest themselves of certain items and pass through again until clear.
THE TRIBE. William & Mary returns home after opening the season with back-to-back road matches. The Tribe played to a 1-1 draw at Loyola Maryland in the season opener before being edged by Army, 3-2, last Thursday in West Point.
Despite the 0-1-1 start, W&M has generated more than twice as many shots as its opponents, holding a 25-12 advantage through two matches. The Tribe has also put 14 shots on goal compared to eight for its opponents and holds a 12-10 edge in corner kicks.
ABBEY ON THE ATTACK. Sophomore midfielder Mia Abbey has found the back of the net in each of the Tribe's first two matches. The Preseason All-CAA selection scored W&M's lone goal in the season-opening draw at Loyola Maryland before converting a penalty kick in the 48th minute at Army.
Abbey leads the Tribe with two goals and four points while also pacing the team with eight shots and five shots on goal. She has accounted for two of W&M's three goals this season.
CREATING CHANCES. W&M is averaging 12.5 shots per match while limiting its opponents to six. The Tribe has put 56% of its attempts on goal through the opening two contests.
The Green and Gold turned in its most productive offensive performance of the young season at Army, outshooting the Black Knights, 18-9, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. W&M also generated nine corner kicks compared to two for Army. Senior Lindsay Wilson scored her first goal of the season in the final minute against the Black Knights.
THE HOKIES. Virginia Tech enters Thursday's match unbeaten at 2-0-2. The Hokies are coming off a 2-2 draw against Maryland on Sunday.
TRIBE VS. HOKIES. William & Mary holds a 10-8-1 advantage in the all-time series against Virginia Tech. The teams played to a 3-3 draw last season in Blacksburg with the Hokies ranked No. 20 nationally.
W&M rallied from three separate one-goal deficits in the second half of last year's meeting. Wilson scored in the 63rd minute before Brooke Oswald provided the final equalizer in the 88th minute.
The Tribe will look for its first victory over Virginia Tech since a 2-1 neutral-site win in Chapel Hill on Nov. 11, 2004. The Hokies last visited Williamsburg in 2022, earning a 4-3 victory.
HOME SWEET HOME. Thursday marks W&M's first match at Martin Family Stadium this season. The Tribe posted a 7-2-1 record in Williamsburg in 2025, with its seven home victories marking the program's most since 2014.
THE MOUNTAINEERS. Appalachian State enters the week with a 2-1-1 record following a 2-0 victory at Gardner-Webb on Sunday. The Mountaineers will travel to East Carolina on Thursday before welcoming the Tribe to Boone.
TRIBE VS. MOUNTAINEERS. William & Mary is 2-0 all-time against Appalachian State. The programs met last season in Williamsburg, with the Tribe earning a 2-0 victory on Aug. 24, 2025.
