WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's soccer fell to Virginia Tech, 3-1, in its home opener Thursday evening at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Sophomore Mia Abbey scored the Tribe's lone goal in the 87th minute, finding the back of the net for the third consecutive match to open the season. Virginia Tech (3-0-2) outshot W&M (0-2-1), 18-8, and held an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Tribe finished with a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
First Half
W&M nearly struck first in the seventh minute when freshman Ava Magnuson sent an attempt off the crossbar.
Virginia Tech broke through in the 10th minute when Anna Weir scored off assists from Eliana Salama and Peyton May to give the Hokies a 1-0 advantage. Weir struck again just over two minutes later, this time off assists from Celine Kampmann and Salama, to extend the lead to 2-0.
Goalkeeper Gwen Doughty helped keep the Tribe within two, making four saves over the opening 45 minutes. W&M generated five first-half shots, including two from Magnuson, but entered halftime trailing 2-0.
Second Half
Junior goalkeeper Mia Tegeris replaced Doughty to begin the second half.
Virginia Tech added to its lead just 2:15 into the period as Weir completed the hat trick off an assist from Gabby Ciocca to make it 3-0. Tegeris made her lone save of the half in the 54th minute, stopping an attempt from Salama.
The Tribe generated a pair of corner kicks in a four-minute stretch before Ava Marvin and Kenley Campbell recorded attempts as W&M looked to cut into the deficit.
Abbey broke through for the Green and Gold with 3:17 remaining, scoring in the 87th minute to extend her season-opening scoring streak to three matches and bring the final margin to 3-1.
Abbey has accounted for three of the Tribe's four goals through the opening three matches of the season.
