Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 23 William & Mary women's soccer team fell in its non-conference finale 2-1 to Princeton on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Haley Kent tallied the Tribe's lone goal in the match. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 6-2-1 overall, while Princeton improves to 5-3.
Princeton fired the match's first shot in the eighth minute. Emily Sura cleared some space and put her chance on target, but senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey was there for the save. The Tigers also had a pair of shots from Tyler Lussi go wide in the 19th and 20th minutes.
The Tribe's first look came in the 22nd minute. Senior Katie Johnston was able to fire a shot, but it was pushed wide left.
Each team placed a shot on target in the closing minutes of the first half. Princeton's Beth Stella fired a shot in the 25th minute that was saved by Casey, before Johnston put a shot on frame that was saved by Princeton goalkeeper Hannah Winner.
Princeton scored the match's first goal in the opening stages of the second half. Vanessa Gregoire and Tyler Lussi connected on a give-and-go that ended with Lussi scoring into the right side of the goal.
W&M turned up its pressure following the Princeton goal. Johnston fired a shot just wide of the goal in the 48th minute, before she sailed a shot wide in the 55th minute. The final chance in the stretch came off of a shot by senior Leci Irvin that had to be stopped by Winner.
The Tribe found the equalizer in the 71st minute off of a corner kick. Senior Nicole Baxter played the ball in to the box, where it rattled around. Kent was able to collect the loose ball and put into the back of the net. The sophomore's first career goal, knotted the score 1-1.
Princeton tried to find the winner with a shot in the 88th minute. Mikaela Symanovich was able to put a shot on target, but Casey was there for her third save of the match.
The Tigers scored the game-winner just two minutes into the first overtime period. Mimi Asom created space and fired a shot from just inside the 18 into the back of the net.
Both teams finished the match with 11 shots in the match. Princeton, however, had a 6-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Johnston led the way with five shots for the Green and Gold, while Irvin finished with three shots.
Casey recorded four saves in the match for the College. With her four saves she is now just 28 saves away from moving to second place all-time in school history.
The Green and Gold open Colonial Athletic Association play with a two-match home stand next weekend. The Tribe welcomes Hofstra on Friday, Sept. 25, before playing host to Northeastern on Sunday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
