WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Sophomore Ellie Leffler scored twice as William & Mary women's soccer battled VCU to a 2-2 draw on Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.
Leffler, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, moved into a tie for the team lead with three goals this season. Freshman Ashley DeLeo and junior Kenley Campbell each recorded their first assist and point of the season, while sophomore goalkeeper Gwen Doughty tied a career high with six saves.
W&M (0-4-2) outshot VCU (0-5-2), 16-14, and the teams each put eight attempts on goal. The Tribe also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
First Half
Doughty was tested early, making her first save of the afternoon in the sixth minute on an attempt from Luciana Gonzalez Cordero.
The Tribe generated its first opportunity two minutes later when Campbell sent an attempt wide before senior Lindsay Wilson put a shot on frame in the 12th minute. Mia Abbey followed with an attempt on goal in the 26th, forcing another save from VCU goalkeeper Cameryn Nunn.
W&M controlled the opportunities for much of the opening half, earning five corner kicks while holding VCU to one. Doughty made three saves over the opening 45 minutes to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Second Half
The scoring opened just over two minutes into the second half. DeLeo set up Leffler in the 48th minute for the sophomore's second goal of the season, giving W&M a 1-0 advantage. The assist marked DeLeo's first collegiate point.
VCU answered in the 56th minute when Jessica Gotshall scored off an assist from Alexis Cox to even the match at 1-1.
Leffler struck again less than seven minutes later. Campbell picked up her first point of the season with an assist on Leffler's second goal of the afternoon in the 63rd minute, putting the Tribe back in front, 2-1.
The Rams responded again in the 67th minute as Monique Mcenhimer scored off an assist from Isabelle Franklin to level the match at 2-2.
W&M continued to push for the go-ahead goal, putting four shots on frame over the final 15 minutes. Abbey forced three saves from Nunn during the second half, while Sydney Incarnato also put an attempt on goal in the 83rd minute.
Doughty made a pair of late saves, including one in the 90th minute, to preserve the draw.
The Tribe finished with 11 shots in the second half and 16 for the match. Abbey led W&M with six attempts, including three on goal, while Leffler scored on both of her shots on frame.
