WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Junior goalkeeper Mia Tegeris recorded a career-high nine saves, but William & Mary women's soccer fell to Liberty, 2-0, on Thursday evening at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Tegeris played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tribe (0-4-1), making three saves in the opening half and six after the break. Liberty (4-2-1) finished with a 20-3 advantage in shots and put 11 attempts on goal. W&M held five corner kicks to the Flames' seven.
First Half
Tegeris was tested early and turned away Sallie Garner's attempt in the fifth minute before making another stop on Haley Noblit in the 12th.
Senior Ava Schultz recorded the Tribe's lone attempt of the opening half in the seventh minute, sending a shot high. Liberty generated eight shots in the first 45 minutes, but Tegeris made three saves to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Second Half
W&M opened the second half with a pair of corner kicks in the first four minutes, but Liberty broke the scoreless tie at the 49:54 mark when Halle Engle found the back of the net to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.
Tegeris kept the Tribe within one with three saves over the next five minutes, denying Avenley Monteith, Noblit and Engle. She added three more stops later in the half, including back-to-back saves in the 71st minute.
The Tribe looked for the equalizer late, with sophomore Ellie Leffler recording an attempt in the 81st minute before freshman Kerys Palmer sent a shot high less than a minute later. W&M also earned a pair of corner kicks during the stretch.
Liberty added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Margaret Garner scored off an assist from Avery Paulson to bring the final margin to 2-0.
The shutout marked the first time this season that W&M was held without a goal.
