Women's Tennis Drops Close NCAA Championship Match to #31 Dartmouth

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - William and Mary women's tennis senior Jeltje Loomans won her singles match in the opening round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday morning, but it wasn't enough as No. 31-ranked Dartmouth pulled out a 4-1 triumph over the No. 49-ranked Tribe. The Big Green earned a spot in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m., while improving to 18-5. The CAA Champion Tribe closed out the campaign at 16-7.

In doubles, the Tribe and Big Green split the top two posts. In a match-up of first team all-league pairs, junior Leeza Nemchinov and Loomans rolled to an 8-2 win over Taylor Ng and Kristina Mathis at No. 1. The Tribe twosome ran its win streak to eight, improving to 25-4 overall and 19-3 at No. 1. Dartmouth took the initial point of the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.

The Big Green pushed its lead to 3-0 with convincing wins at No. 4 and No. 5, before Loomans got W&M on the board with a victory at No. 2. After dropping the first game to Dartmouth's Katherine Yau, the Tribe senior won six of the final seven games of the first set, before pulling out a tiebreaker win in the second, 7-6 (3). Loomans closed out her career with five straight singles wins and 69 total singles victories. During her senior campaign, she wrapped up the year at 25-7 overall and 17-5 at the second spot.

Trailing 3-1, W&M needed victories in a trio of hotly-contested matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6. Dartmouth earned a spot in the second round with a victory at the No. 3 spot. In a match-up of freshmen, the Big Green's Kristina Mathis outlasted CAA Rookie of the Year Olivia Thaler, 7-5, 7-6 (4), to clinch the Dartmouth win.

At the top singles post, Nemchinov and Ng squared off in a battle of conference players of the year and NCAA Singles Championship qualifiers. Nemchinov won the opening set in dominating 6-1 fashion, before Ng answered with three straight games to end the second set, claiming a 7-5 win. Nemchinov was up 4-2 in the third set when the match was abandoned with team result decided.

Trailing 5-2 in the opening set at No. 6, freshman Cecily Wuenscher battled back to force a tiebreaker, before dropping the set to Akiko Okuda, 7-6 (3). In the second set, Wuenscher again rallied from a 4-1 deficit to get back on serve, before the match was abandoned.

Loomans and Nemchinov will take part in the NCAA Individual Championship, beginning May 20 in Waco, Texas. Nemchinv, who is ranked No. 53 nationally, takes part in the singles championship, while she and Loomans compete in the doubles event. Baylor University is the host of the NCAA Championships, which are set for May 20-25.
