RICHMOND, Va. - William and Mary junior
Leeza Nemchinov was selected the Most Outstanding Player at the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship in a vote by the league's coaches, the CAA announced on Friday. Nemchinov, who went a perfect 3-0 in both singles and doubles during the weekend, led the program to its 23rd CAA Championship and is the eighth Tribe player on the 11th occasion to be named the CAA Tournament MOP.
"Leeza's season has been one of the most outstanding in program history, and her improvement from sophomore year has been nothing short of remarkable,” head coach
Tyler Thomson said. “I believe Leeza can do some damage at the NCAAs and add to what she has already accomplished."
Nemchinov continued her torrid singles play dropping just 10 combined games in her three matches at the Championship. She posted straight-set victories over Delaware's Danea Jonjic' (6-0, 6-1) in the quarterfinals, JMU's Taylor Pinchoff (6-3, 6-2) in the semifinals and CofC's Samantha Maddox (6-1, 6-2) in the finals. Nemchinov, who is ranked No. 54 nationally, pushed her singles record to 27-3 this season, including 19-1 at the No. 1 position. Her 90 winning percentage is on pace to set the school record.
In doubles, Nemchinov partnered with senior
Jeltje Loomans to clinch the initial point of the match in all three CAA Tournament matches. The duo defeated UD's Jonjic' and Arielle Shuren (8-1) in the quarterfinals, JMU's Pinchoff and Alex Huie (8-6) in the semifinals and CofC's Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield (8-5) in the finals. Nemchinov and Loomans, who are ranked No. 66 nationally, own a doubles mark of 24-4, including 18-3 at the No. 1 slot.
Prior to the CAA Championship, Nemchinov was named the 2015 CAA Player of the Year. She earned First Team All-CAA honors in singles for the third straight season and in doubles for the second straight campaign.
