Women's Soccer Opens CAA Tournament Play Friday Versus UNCW

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team opens postseason play in the semifinals of the 2015 Women's Soccer Championship in Hempstead, N.Y. on Friday afternoon. The Tribe takes on the No. 3-seeded UNCW Seahawks on Friday, Nov. 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Scouting the Tribe
William & Mary (13-3-2) concluded the regular season tied for first in Colonial Athletic Association, but will be the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament due to tie breakers. The Tribe, which has been unbeaten in its last eight matches, looks move its winning streak to two matches when they square off against the Seahawks on Friday afternoon. W&M posted a 2-0 win at Elon in its last outing on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Senior Nicole Baxter scored on a penalty kick, before sophomore Rachel Moore scored an insurance goal in the victory. The attack has been balanced as well, as 11 different players have netted a goal. Senior Samantha Cordum leads the team with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Classmate Katie Johnston is second on the team with six goals, an assist and 13 points, while sophomore Sami Grasso has scored five goals, has two assists and 12 points. The final player in double figures is Baxter, who has scored two goal, dished out a team-high seven assists, and has 11 points. Senior Caroline Casey has started every match in goal for this season for the Tribe, while sophomore Samantha Johnson has also seen time. Casey boasts a 0.65 goal-against-average with 73 saves, and nine shutouts.

Scouting the Seahawks
UNCW (14-5-1) looks move its winning streak to five matches as they head into the semifinals this weekend in New York. The Seahawks defeated No. 6-seeded Delaware in the quarterfinals 4-0 to advance to this weekend's semifinals. The Seahawks have four straight, all by multiple goals, since falling in Williamsburg on Oct. 11. UNCW has five players in double figure points, led by Maddie McCormick, who has scored 14 goals, has five assists, and 33 points. Katrina Guillou has scored 10 goals, four assists, and 25 points, while Stephanie Bronson has scored six goals, four assists, for 16 points. Rounding out the double figure scores are Kennedy Ulrich (four goals, three assists, 11 points), and Lindsey Byrne (four goals, two assists, 10 points). Carolyn Huddy has started all 20 matches in goal this season for UNCW, while Liisa Rahkola has also appeared in a match. Huddy boasts a 1.14 goals-against-average, 66 saves, and nine shutouts. Huddy and the Seahawk defense has not conceded a goal in 413 minutes, dating back to Oct. 11.

Series History
W&M will meet UNCW on Friday for the 24th time in school history. The Tribe leads the all-time series 22-1-0. W&M picked up a 1-0 victory in Williamsburg on Oct. 11. Junior Clara Logsdon scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute, while senior Caroline Casey made six saves in the shutout. The Seahawks did out shoot the Tribe by a 15-9 margin in the match.

To the Nines
The Colonial Athletic Association announced its end of season awards on Wednesday night and the William & Mary women's soccer team was well represented, have nine student-athletes receive 11 different awards. Senior Caroline Casey highlighted the Tribe's honors by being named the Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Casey on the All-CAA First-Team was classmate Nicole Baxter and junior Clara Logsdon. Sophomore Rachel Moore earned second team honors, while seniors Samantha Cordum, Leci Irvin, and Katie Johnston along with sophomore Sami Grasso earned third team citations. Freshman Mackenzie Kober earned an all-rookie team nod, while Cordum was also named to the league's all-academic squad. The Tribe's nine players were the most of any team in the CAA to be honored, while the 11 different awards were also the most in the CAA. The trio of first teamers was tied for the most in the league. Additionally, Casey becomes the Tribe's first CAA Defensive Player of the Year since 2009 when Diana Weigel won the award.
 
Hello, Again
Since the CAA regular season schedule is a true round robin, the W&M women's soccer team squared off of against all six teams that qualified for the 2015 CAA Women's Soccer Team. The Tribe posted a 4-1-1 record against the entire field. The Tribe holds a 1-1-1 mark against the other three teams that qualified for the CAA Semifinals.

Stuck in Neutral
Friday afternoon's match against the Seahawks will be the fourth time the Tribe has played on a neutral field this season. W&M has posted a 2-1-0 record in its previous three neutral site games this season. The Tribe won the Fairfield Inn JMU Invite by beating Seton Hall and No. 25 Georgetown, before tying Wake Forest at the N.C. State Tournament.

Nothing But CLASS
Senior Caroline Casey was named one of 10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award on Oct. 26. Casey has shined on and off of the field during her time with the Tribe. She is involved in multiple community-based activities and also made a medical relief trip to Nicaragua in the winter of 2014. The Chesapeake, Virginia native thrives in the classroom, while also being a two-time captain and All-CAA player.

All They Do is Win
William & Mary clinched its NCAA record 35th straight winning season with a 2-0 victory at Drexel on Friday, Oct. 16. The 35-winning season account for every year of the Tribe women's soccer program.

Five for Fighting
The Tribe won six straight games from Sept. 27 to Oct. 25, which accounted for its longest winning streak of the season. It also marks the fifth straight season that the Tribe has posted, at least, a five match winning streak during a single season.

Tip of the Cap
Senior Samantha Cordum netted her first career hat trick against Northeastern on Sunday afternoon. She scored goals in the 15th, 60th, and 87th minutes to help the
Tribe to a 3-1 victory.

D, D, Defense
The Tribe has done a very good job of team defending this season, and it has shown as the Green and Gold has only allowed 12 goals this season. The Tribe has fours team saves, which were credited to Ashley Booth, Leci Irvin, Sami Grasso, and Meghan Musgrove.  

Balanced Attack
Eleven different players have already netted goals this season for the Green and Gold, which matches last year's total of 11 different players to score.

National Recognition
Senior Nicole Baxter was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week for the week of Aug. 24.Baxter started in played all 90 minutes in the Tribe's season opening 5-1 victory over Seton Hall on Friday afternoon. On Sunday as the Tribe knocked off its first ranked team since 2011, Baxter played a hand in all three goals. She assisted on sophomore Rachel Moore's game-winning goal in the ninth minute, scored on a penalty kick in the 45th minute, and assisted on senior Samantha Cordum's goal in the 79th minute.

Weekly Awards
Caroline Casey was named CAA Player of the week for the second time this season earlier this week. She recorded a pair of shutouts in the Tribe's two conference victories over Charleston and UNCW. She recorded eight saves for the weekend, and faced 15 shots in Sunday's victory.
For the second straight week, W&M had a player of the week earn CAA Player of the Week honor for Sept. 14. This time senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey was earned the honor. The senior recorded five saves and helped preserve her shutout in the final moments of the Old Dominion match on Friday night. However, her best match came on Sunday as she turned away a season-high tying seven shots. She helped the Tribe defense withstand a final minute stretch of three shots and two corner kicks in the final minute.
Senior Katie Johnston was named the CAA Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 7. played 58 minutes and fired three shots, one on goal, in the Tribe's 1-1 draw against Wake Forest on Friday night. Johnston saved her best for Sunday afternoon, scoring a pair of goals in W&M's 3-0 win at N.C. State. She scored the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute. The forward added the exclamation point in the 71st minute when she registered her second tally of the match. She finished the day with a match-high five shots.
Johnston is the second Tribe player to earn a weekly award as freshman Mackenzie Kober was named the CAA Rookie of the Week after she scored a goal and had an assist in her first collegiate weekend scoring a goal and registering an assist in the Tribe's 5-1 victory over Seton Hall.

Movin' on Up
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey has started every game in goal of her Tribe career, and she is beginning to climb up the W&M record book. Her nine shutouts this season rank her tied fifth in single-season school history. The Chesapeake, Virginia native, who is also a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, ranks tied for third in school history with 27 career shutouts, and has 290 career saves, which rank her second all-time.

Connect Four
The Tribe was selected to finish fourth in annual CAA Preseason Poll voted on by the league's 10 head coaches. Back-to-back defending champion Northeastern was selected to repeat as champion, while Hofstra (second) and James Madison third were picked ahead of the Tribe. Despite the fourth place prediction, the voting was very close, and W&M was just 12 points behind first-place Hofstra.

Preseason Praise
W&M had a league high five players selected to CAA Preseason Honors this year. Leading the way were seniors Leci Irvin and Caroline Casey, who received All-CAA Preseason honors. Senior Samantha Cordum, and sophomores Rachel Moore and Elysse Branton garnered honorable mention accolades.

What's Ahead
The winner of Friday's match will advance to the CAA Championship on Sunday, Nov. 8. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and will be broadcasted live on the American Sports Network.
