BALTIMORE, Md. — William & Mary women's soccer opened the 2026 season with a 1-1 draw against Loyola Maryland on Wednesday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Mia Abbey scored the Tribe's lone goal in the 25th minute, with junior Brooke Oswald and freshman Ava Magnuson picking up assists. W&M (0-0-1) outshot Loyola Maryland (0-0-1), 7-3, and held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.
First Half
Loyola generated the early pressure with three corner kicks in the opening four minutes, but goalkeeper Gwen Doughty kept the Greyhounds off the board with a save in the fifth minute.
The Tribe responded with a pair of chances as Ava Schultz and Ava Marvin each put shots on goal, forcing saves in the 15th and 16th minutes, respectively.
W&M broke through in the 25th minute when Abbey found the back of the net to give the Tribe a 1-0 advantage. Magnuson and Oswald were credited with assists on the goal, giving Magnuson her first collegiate point in her first career start.
The lead lasted just over two minutes as Loyola's Katie Ormerod scored off an assist from Betzael Contreras in the 27th minute to even the match at 1-1. The score remained tied heading into halftime.
Second Half
Junior goalkeeper Mia Tegeris replaced Doughty to begin the second half and helped keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard over the final 45 minutes.
Abbey continued to create opportunities for the Tribe, sending a shot high in the 60th minute before putting another attempt on goal in the 67th. Oswald followed with a shot less than 15 seconds later as W&M looked for the go-ahead goal.
Freshman Ashley DeLeo added an attempt in the 78th minute, but neither side was able to break the deadlock before the final whistle.
W&M finished the night with seven shots to Loyola's three, while Abbey led all players with three attempts and two shots on goal. The Tribe put four of its seven shots on frame. Doughty made one save in the opening half, while Tegeris did not face a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes.
