RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association announced its end of season awards on Wednesday night and the William & Mary women's soccer team was well represented, having nine student-athletes receive 11 different awards.
Senior
Caroline Casey highlighted the Tribe's honors by being named the Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Casey on the All-CAA First-Team was classmate
Nicole Baxter and junior
Clara Logsdon. Sophomore
Rachel Moore earned second team honors, while seniors
Samantha Cordum,
Leci Irvin, and
Katie Johnston along with sophomore
Sami Grasso earned third team citations. Freshman
Mackenzie Kober earned an all-rookie team nod, while Cordum was also named to the league's all-academic squad.
The Tribe's nine players were the most of any team in the CAA to be honored, while the 11 different awards were also the most in the CAA. The trio of first teamers was tied for the most in the league. Additionally, Casey becomes the Tribe's first CAA Defensive Player of the Year since 2009 when Diana Weigel won the award.
Casey, who earns her second First-Team All-CAA honor and her third and fourth overall all-conference award, anchored a Tribe defense to a league-high 10 shutouts. The senior boasted a league-best 0.65 goals-against-average with 73 saves, and nine individual shutouts. Her nine shutouts this season rank her tied fifth in single-season school history. The Chesapeake, Virginia native, who is also a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, ranks tied for third in school history with 27 career shutouts, and has 290 career saves, which rank her second all-time.
Baxter, who picks up her first All-CAA honor as a member of the First-Team, was a valuable asset to the Tribe midfield both offensively and defensively. She leads the team with seven assists, while she's added two goals for 11 points this season. As one of the defensive midfielder's on the team she has also helped a defense to a league-high 10 shutouts this season, while the team is allowing just 0.67 goals a game.
The final first-team selection was Logsdon, who earns her second All-CAA award after being named to the all-rookie squad following the 2013 season. A key defender on the Tribe's backline she has appeared in every match and played every minute this season for W&M, the only Tribe player to accomplish that feat. She has helped anchor a defense to a league-high 10 shutouts this season, while the team is allowing just 0.67 goals a game. Logsdon has also worked her way into the attacking third and has scored two goals, has one assist, and five points.
Moore, who earns her second straight All-CAA Second-Team honor and her third All-CAA honor, was instrumental in the Tribe's midfield all season. She started all 18 matches, and finished the season with four goals, one assist, and nine points, which includes scoring in two of the Tribe's final three games. A defensive midfielder, Moore, has also helped the Tribe defense to a CAA-high 10 shutouts, while the team is allowing just 0.67 goals a game.
Despite only playing in 11 games this season for the Tribe, Cordum was still selected for the All-CAA Third-Team, which is her second straight All-CAA honor. She is still the Tribe's leading scorer with seven goals, two assists, and 16 points. She also netted her first career hat trick in W&M's 3-1 victory over two-time defending CAA Champion Northeastern. She finished her Tribe career playing in 51 games, with 16 goals, seven assists, and 39 points. Cordum was also selected to the CAA All-Academic team for the second straight season. Earlier this season the Boise, Idaho native was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First-Team.
Irvin, who garners her first All-CAA honor, has been a valuable asset for the Tribe playing in the back, midfield, and in the front. This season she has appeared in all 18 matches with 16 starts, and has registered two goals for four points. A staple in the Tribe lineup, she has started all but three matches in her career, and has scored five career goals, with two assists, and 14 points. Also a star in the classroom, Irvin earned CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-District honors already this season.
Johnston, who also earns her first All-CAA award, has enjoyed a breakout senior season with the Green and Gold. She has started all 18 matches with six goals, one assist, and 13 points, all of which are career-highs. For her career, she has appeared in 61 matches with 37 starts, she has scored 10 goals, two assists, and 22 points. The Haddonfield, New Jersey native has previously been a conference champion thrower with the Tribe track & field program.
Grasso picks up her first All-CAA selection with her third team nod. The sophomore has started all 18 matches this season for the Tribe scoring five goals, two assist, and 12 points. She has set career-highs in goals and points this season. For her career, she has already appeared in 33 matches, scoring six goals, with five assists, and 17 points.
The final Tribe selection was Kober, who earned a spot on the all-rookie squad. Kober burst onto the scene as a freshman and played in 17 matches with nine starts, but has started the last five matches for W&M. She has scored three goals with two assists, and eight points. In her first career match against Seton Hall, the freshman scored a goal and added an assist, while she also accomplished the same feat against Delaware. She was named CAA Rookie of the Week for the week of Aug. 24.
The Green and Gold opens CAA Tournament play in the semifinals when they take on No. 3-seeded UNCW on Friday, Nov. 6 in Hempstead, N.Y. Kickoff for the match is set for 4:30 p.m. The CAA Championship match is slated for Sunday, Nov. 8 with a 2:30 kickoff. The American Sports Network will televise the championship game.
