WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 17, 2015)—The William and Mary women's gymnastics team opened the 2015 season with an outstanding performance, as it edged Towson, 193.550 - 193.125, Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena. The impressive score represents the best team total in a season opener during head coach Mary Lewis' 21-year tenure.
En route to posting the historic team score, Tribe gymnasts combined to win three of the four events as well as the all-around title. Fifth-year senior Larson Lasek registered the top all-around score (38.825), while senior Maggie Lundeen won the floor title (9.825). Junior Brittany Stover tallied the top mark on vault (9.850), while she and sophomore Briana Gironda tied for first on bars (9.775).
W&M opened the meet on vault where it posted a 48.325. In addition to Stover's winning score of 9.850, which ranks tied for the seventh-best mark in school history, junior Alyssa Glass also came up big with a 9.675 to place third. Lasek and sophomore Olivia O'Connor tied for fourth with a 9.650.
The Tribe claimed the top four spots on bars to help the squad earn a 48.600. Gironda and Stover's pair of 9.775's led the way, while Lasek and freshman Monica Ouellet recorded a 9.725 and a 9.700, respectively.
Senior Brandy Stover was the College's top scorer on beam and totaled a 9.775. Sophomore Olivia O'Connor also performed well and tallied a 9.750 to help W&M total a 47.975 in the event.
After missing last season with an injury, Lundeen won the floor title in her return to competition and helped the Tribe register a team score of 48.650. O'Connor and Lasek tied for second with a 9.750, while Brittany Stover earned a 9.725.
W&M also earned the top two spots in all-around, as Lasek won with a 38.825 and Brittany Stover earned a 38.400.
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at Towson next Sunday at 4 p.m.
