COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The William and Mary women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Big 10 foe Maryland on Thursday night. The Terrapins (1-2) scored three goals in the first half en route to its first victory of the season. W&M falls to 1-1 on the young season.
Maryland opened the match with a flurry, netting a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes. In the third minute, Rachelle Beanlands sent a long ball over everybody and found Alex Doddy, who was able to score the first goal of the night.
In the 14th minute, Doddy got open again in front of the net. For the second time in the match she was able to score, tapping the ball into the lower left corner.
The Tribe did have a couple of shots after the rally, and a pair of corner kicks. Senior Emory Camper and freshman Adrienne Maday each had shots blocked.
Maryland scored its third goal of the half in the 38th minute. Alex Anthony sent a pass to Erika Nelson. Nelson, who was 35 yards out, buried a shot into the upper left corner of the net. The tally gave the Terps a 3-0 advantage.
The Terrapins picked up where they left off in the second half. Just two minutes in, Riley Barger found Aubrey Baker. Baker then dished to Anthony, who was 35 yards out, fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal. The goal gave Maryland a 4-0 lead
W&M did have a golden opportunity in the 48th minute. Senior Samantha Cordum put a shot on target but a Maryland defender cleared it off of the goal line for a team save.
The Tribe had another chance in the 56th minute. Off of a corner kick by freshman Haley Kent, junior Nicole Baxter sent a shot on frame, but Maryland keeper Rachelle Beanlands was there for the stop.
W&M turned the pressure up in the final minutes of the match, but couldn't get on the scoreboard. The Tribe fired four shots, including one on frame, but Beanlands was able to preserve her first shutout of the season.
Maryland held a 16-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 advantage on shots on goal. Junior Caroline Casey made six saves in the match for the Tribe. Freshman Sami Grasso led the squad with three shots, all on goal.
W&M concludes its three-game season opening road trip on Sunday, Aug. 31 at George Washington. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. The Tribe returns home for its home opener on Thursday, Sept 4 when they welcome La Salle. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m.
