WILLAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Emory Camper scored a pair of goals, including the equalizer with .4 seconds remaining, but the William and Mary women's soccer team fell in overtime to Drexel, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 10-3-1, 4-2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Drexel improves to 7-5-2, 4-0-1 in league action.
W&M had the first strong look at a goal in the 29th minute. Camper fired a shot that was blocked out of bounds by a Dragon defender. On the ensuing corner kick, sophomore Haley Kavanaugh was able to head the ball towards the cage, but Drexel goalkeeper Kelsie Fye stopped it.
Junior goalkeeper Caroline Casey made a pair of saves in the first half. The first came in the 26th minute when Melissa Chapman fired a shot from just outside of the box. The second shot came from Chapman as well, but again it was saved.
W&M got on the board first with a goal in the 59th minute. Camper created space for herself and charged to the right corner of the box. She collected the ball and rocketed her shot off of the goalie and into the lower right corner of the goal. Her seventh of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived, as Drexel came storming back with the equalizer mere seconds later. Off of the kickoff, Jacki Sieder came charging down the right sideline of the pitch. She sent a cross to Madison Dunn, who was able to head the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. The second goal of the season for Dunn tied the match at 1-1.
Drexel took its first lead in the 87th minute. Off of a corner kick, it looked like the Tribe was going to be able to clear, but two players collided and the ball was set free. Dunn sent a quick pass to Megan Hammaker, who found Lauren Stollar. Stollar, who was wide open, buried the ball into the empty net. The tally moved the Dragons lead to 2-1.
On its last ditch effort, the Green and Gold was able to find the equalizer in the 90th minute. Junior Leci Irvin sent a long pass down field that found freshman Sami Grasso. With time expiring she sent a pass to Camper. Camper rocketed her shot into the lower right corner with just 0:00.4 showing on the game clock. Her second goal of the day knotted the score 2-2.
The Dragons went on to find the game-winner with just a minute left in the first overtime. Off of a free kick, Alyssa Findlay sent the ball into the box. The ball got through the Tribe defense and Chapman guided the ball into the empty net. The goal won the match 3-2 for Drexel.
Despite the result, the Tribe outshot the Dragons 19-10, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Casey made three saves in goal for the Tribe, while Camper finished tied for a match-high with five shots.
Camper became the fifth Tribe player this season to record a two goal game. She joins her classmates Anna Madden and Aly Shaughnessy, along with junior Samantha Cordum (twice) as players to register two-goal games.
The Green and Gold concludes its regular season home schedule on Sunday, Oct. 19 when they welcome CAA newcomer Elon to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Kickoff for the Senior Day match is set for 2 p.m.
