CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Emory Camper netted the game-tying goal in the 46th minute and sophomore Caroline Casey recorded six saves as the William and Mary women's soccer team battled Rutgers to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon. The match was part of the Virginia Soccer Nike Classic in Charlottesville, Va. The Tribe finished the tournament with a 1-0-1 record.
William and Mary is now 2-1-2 on the season, while Rutgers, who is receiving votes in the NSCAA Poll is 4-1-1.
The Green and Gold raced down the field, opening the match with the game's first shot. In just the game's third minute senior Dani Rutter uncorked a shot, but it was blocked.
Rutgers had its first chance of the afternoon in the seventh minute. Jonelle Filligno put a shot on frame, but Casey was there for the save.
The match remained scoreless until the 39th minute. Rutgers' Tricia DiPaolo sent a pass into the front of the goal and found Maria Gerew. Gerew blasted the ball into the top of the net, lifting Rutgers to a 1-0 lead.
William and Mary answered quickly in the second half. In the 46th minute, Rutter sent a through ball that found Camper. Camper, who was 15 yards out, rocketed the ball into the back of the net, tying the match 1-1. The tally was Camper's fourth of the season.
The Tribe and Scarlet Knights traded chances at the end of regulation. Rutgers had two chances in the 88th minute starting with a shot by Erica Skorski, which was stopped by Casey. On the ensuing corner kick, Amy Pietangelo had a look, but it off the crossbar. William and Mary's final chance of regulation came in 89th minute when Rutter fired a shot on frame, but Rutger's keeper Jessica Janosz made the save.
Rutgers controlled the pace of play in the first overtime, firing the period's only three shots. Casey made the stop on the only one that came on frame.
In the second overtime, William and Mary had the best look. In the 108th minute, Camper fired on frame, but Janosz made the stop. Both teams played the final three minutes without a shot and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Casey was strong in goal all afternoon for the Tribe. The Chesapeake, Va. native made six saves for the Green and Gold, which was off her season-high of seven (against George Mason).
Rutgers out shot William and Mary 17-7, while holding a 7-3 advantage in shot shots on goal.
The match was the third overtime game of the season for William and Mary. The Tribe played only three overtime matches in all of the 2012 season.
William and Mary returns to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field to open a three-match home stand on Thursday, Sept. 12 against George Washington. The Tribe and Colonials get underway at 7 p.m.
