WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Emory Camper netted a pair of goals and classmate Anna Madden added another, as the William and Mary women's soccer team rode a big second half to a 3-0 victory over High Point on Friday night.
The Tribe improved to 1-1-1 on the year, while the Panthers dropped to 0-2-0 on the young season.
W&M came out of the gates quickly to open the match, firing the game's first four shots. Sophomore Katie Johnston launched a shot in the eighth minute that deflected off a defender for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, seniors Audrey Barry and Dani Rutter each fired shots, but neither could find the back of net.
Again in the 20th minute, the Tribe went back on the attack. Sophomore Samantha Cordum put a shot on frame, but High Point goalkeeper Jesse May was there for the save.
The Green and Gold controlled the pace of play in the first half. The College finished the first period with a 12-2 advantage in shots and 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
In the second half, William and Mary's offense went to work. In the 55th minute, Camper charged the center of the pitch and rocketed a shot from 20 yards out into the center of the net, lifting the Tribe to a 1-0 advantage.
Nearly 20 minutes later after controlling the possession, W&M would double its lead. Barry charged the right side of the field and sent a long cross to the box, where Madden was able to deflect the pass into the goal. The tally was Madden's first of the season, while Barry connected on her second assist of the season.
Camper added the exclamation point in the 85th minute. From nearly the same spot on the field, the Virginia Beach, Va. native booted the ball into the top right corner of the net, giving William and Mary the 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Caroline Casey was strong in goal for W&M. The Chesapeake, Va. native made three saves en route to her first shutout of the season. The blanking was also Casey's eighth career shutout.
William and Mary held a 28-4 advantage in shots on the night, including a 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. The 28 shots and 11 shots on goal were both season-highs for the Tribe.
