Bob Smutsky Takes 10th at Pan-Am Junior Games

William and Mary sophomore Bob Smutsky (Dillsburg, Pa.) finished 10th overall Saturday night at the Pan-American Junior Track and Field Championships, throwing the javelin 61.13 meters (200-7) on a muggy night in Medellin, Colombia.  Smutsky was the best-finishing American in the evnet, which was won by Alex Pascal of the Cayman Islands at 72.82m (238-11).

Smutsky's performance wrapped up a successful summer circuit for the W&M track and field programs, which saw two national champions and three athletes and alumni represent the U.S. in international competition.  At the USAT&F junior championships, both Smutsky and All-American Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio) won national titles, in the javelin and the 5,000m, respectively.  In addition to last night's event, the Tribe's Sarah Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) and Ben Katz '13 represented the U.S. at the Maccabiah Games in late July.  Sarah finished fifth overall in the 400m dash, with a season-best time of 58.69 seconds, and won a bronze medal as part of the American 4x400m relay.  Ben was a bronze medalist himself, in the high jump, and took silver on the U.S.A. 4x100m relay.

William and Mary's 2013-14 season begins on Sept. 6, one week from Friday, with the Tribe cross country teams going on the road to face Richmond in a dual meet.
