The William and Mary men's track and field team opened competition at the UVA Challenge Friday night with just one event, but broke a freshman record in it. The Tribe's weekend in Charlottesville is a last-chance effort to try and gain qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships, which will start with preliminary competition in two weeks.
ResultsThe Tribe's only event of the evening was the hammer throw, where freshman
Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) broke his own freshman record by nearly five feet to place fourth overall. Resetting the record he set just last week at the CAA meet, Frenia threw 50.48 meters (165-7) on the final throw of the series, after earlier throwing another record-setter of 49.49m (162-4) on his first throw of the competition. He also improves into the Tribe's all-time top-10 with the showing, rising to ninth all-time. Sophomore
Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.) was fifth overall in the event, throwing 48.40m (158-9).
The Tribe's weekend continues tomorrow in a variety of events, starting at 4:00 p.m. when both Frenia and Waterfield compete in the shot put.
