Women's Tennis Posts Strong Day at ITA All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - William and Mary women's tennis senior Maria Belaya continued her impressive showing in singles at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, while she and classmate Jeltje Loomans teammed to advance to the doubles quarterfinals on Thursday. Belaya won for the fourth straight time at the event this time knocking off a top-10 opponent, while the Tribe doubles pair won in convincing fashion over a top-20 team from USC. The Riviera/ITA All-American Championship is the first collegiate tennis national championship event of the fall season, featuring the most exclusive championship draws of the top 32 singles players and top 24 double teams in the country.

After winning three straight matches in the qualifying draw, including two over nationally-ranked foes, Belaya drew 2013 All-American and No. 6-seeded Yana Koroleva of Clemson in the opening round of the 32-player main draw. Koroleva, who is ranked No. 7 nationally, took the opening set from Belaya, 6-3, before the Tribe senior bounced back with a 6-1 victory in the second. She carried that momentum over to the third set, outdistancing Koroleva, 6-3, for her first win over a top-10 opponent. In fact, it marked the highest-ranked victory for a Tribe player since current WTA professional and former Green and Gold standout Megan Moulton-Levy defeated the No. 3-ranked player in the country at the 2006 ITA All-American Championships. Belaya upped her fall singles mark to 7-3.

Belaya and Loomans continued their dominating fall with an 8-4 victory over the No. 19-ranked USC team of Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz in the round of 16 of the main doubles draw. Boren and Katz earned a spot opposite the Tribe duo, who had a first-round bye, with a victory over the No. 11-ranked California team of Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting on Thursday. Belaya and Loomans, who are seeded No. 6 at the championship and ranked No. 7 nationally, improved to 7-0 on the fall with their four nationally-ranked win of the season.

On Friday, Belaya and Loomans will face the No. 15-ranked North Carolina team of Whitney Kay and Caroline Price at noon ET in the All-American quarterfinals. Kay and Price advanced on Thursday with an upset victory of the No. 2-seeded Michigan team of Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas. In singles action, Belaya will square off with Texas A&M's Cristina Stancu, who is ranked No. 48 nationally, at 1:45 p.m. ET in the round of 16 of the championship singles draw. The singles quarterfinals are set for 5 p.m. ET on Friday as well.
