Women's Swimming Kicks off Season with 203-58 Win Over Mary Washington

The William and Mary women's swimming team opened the season in impressive fashion Saturday morning, downing Mary Washington 203-58 with wins in 13 of 14 events.  The Tribe, 1-0, won its season-opener for the first time since 2005-06, and now has 63 victories in the Rec Center all-time.

Three of the Tribe's 13 victories were due all or in part to the efforts of junior Megan Howard (McLean, Va.), who won both of her individual efforts and opened the meet on the victorious 200 medley relay.  Howard timed 51.38 seconds in the 100 free, and also came back in 200 IM with a 2:11.47 win.  Her role on the medley was the butterfly, and she combined with Liz Glenn (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Courtney Mizerak (Manassas, Va.), and freshman Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) to win with a time of 1:46.86.  Glenn was also the individual winner in one of her highlight events, the 100 back, touching the wall first in 58.88.

Speaking of freshmen, four earned individual wins in their collegiate debut.  Perhaps most impressive was Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England), timing a lifetime-best 2:02.82 in the 200 backstroke to rank sixth in school history after just one race.  Selina Fuller (Henrico, Va.) won the 200 free in 1:55.82, and Georgie Crompton (Brooklandville, Md.) was first to the wall in the 200 fly, with a time of 2:12.90.  Lauren Yi (Springfield, Va.) snuck in under the minute-mark to claim the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 59.93 seconds.

Senior Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) was another multiple winner for the Tribe, first in the 1,000 free with an easy 10:40.72 showing.  She also led-off the 400 free relay that won in 3:35.33, leading teammates Noelle Klockner (Marlboro, N.J.), Greta Schneider (Moorestown, N.J.), and Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) into the water.  Sophomore Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.) won the 50 free in 24.55 seconds, just .02 seconds off of her liftime-best, and classmate Jenny Lomicka (Henrico, Va.) out-sprinted UMW's All-American in the 200 breast to claim gold in 2:26.81.  Sophomore Elena Marsilii (Falls Church, Va.) rounded out the winners, finishing first in the 500 free with a time of 5:16.83.

William and Mary is back in the pool next Saturday, Oct. 19, with a tri-meet in Washington, D.C.  Georgetown are the hosts on the day, which will also see the Tribe take on defending CAA Champion Towson.
