WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Former
William and Mary men's soccer standout Wade Barrett is among 22 candidates on
the 2013 National Soccer Hall of Fame ballot. The Virginia Beach, Va., native played 10 seasons in Major
League Soccer (MLS) and was a two-time MLS Cup Champion with the Houston Dynamo
in 2006 and 2007. Additionally, Barrett
was a 2002 MLS All-Star with the San Jose Earthquake. He was San Jose's first round pick (12th overall) in the 1998 MLS Draft.
Barrett finished an impressive career at the College ranking sixth all-time in school history with 102 points. Additionally, his 38 goals and 26 assists rank
fourth and ninth, respectively, all-time in the Tribe record books. The four-time Colonial Athletic Association First-Team honoree earned CAA Player of the Year honors and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) First-Team All-America accolades in 1997.
In 2007, Barrett saw action for the U.S. National Team, as
the United States tied Guatemala, 0-0.
Overseas, Barrett suited up for AGF Aarhus of the Danish SuperLiga in the
2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons.
Each voter can list up to 10 candidates per ballot. Any
player appearing on at least 66.7 percent of ballots will earn election, while
any player who does not appear on at least five percent of ballots will be
dropped from the Player ballot.
In order to be eligible for election as
a Player, an individual must be retired as a player for at least three years,
but for no more than 10 years and have either: 1) Played in at least 20
international games for the U.S., or 2) Played at least five seasons in an
American first division professional league and named to a postseason
All-League or All-Star team at least once.
