The William and Mary volleyball team saw its seven-match winning streak come to an end Sunday, falling at Northeastern 3-1 in a match-up of the top two teams in the CAA. The Tribe is now 10-6 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Huskies improved to 14-3 and 3-0 in the conference.
Box Score
The Tribe was led in the match by freshman outside
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.), who had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. The two-time CAA Rookie of the Week, Koleva hit .385, and collected more kills than any other player in the match. Classmate
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) hit .308 with five kills, and also had a match-best five blocks. Redshirt-sophomore
Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.) was the third Tribe player to hit better than .300, scoring seven kills on a .357 attack and adding a pair of blocks.
Also of note, redshirt-freshman
Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) had six kills and three blocks, and sophomore
Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) added seven kills and four digs. Senior captain
Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) distributed 22 assists to go along with seven digs, and sophomore setter
Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) added 14 more assists. Libero
Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) matched Koleva with 12 digs, and junior
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) had seven more digs for the team total.
Long Northeastern scoring runs allowed the Huskies to claim the first two sets, but the Tribe came back in the third with a few choice scoring streaks of its own. The first came early, when the Huskies looked like they were gearing up to create another big lead, but Murray scored a kill to ignite a 6-1 run to put W&M ahead 6-1. Through the middle points, the Tribe kept the lead stable at three, responding to every Northeastern point with one of its own before another 9-3 run put W&M ahead by seven, 20-13. The run included three blocks, including the first point on a block by Albright and Brown that kept the Huskies from tying the score for the first time. W&M would go on to claim the set, 25-21, but Northeastern won the match in the fourth with another long run that propelled the home team to a 25-14 win.
William and Mary is back in action on Tuesday night in Norfolk, taking on Norfolk State at 6 p.m. in the final non-conference match of the year.
