BOONE, N.C. — William & Mary volleyball fell to Western Carolina 3-1 on Saturday in the Mountaineer Classic.
W&M (3-5) broke open the first set after a 5-5 tie, winning seven of the next eight rallies to move ahead 12-6.
Olivia Westfort served four straight points during that stretch, including two aces, with
Teagan Pocius adding a kill from
Cate Hatfield.
The Catamounts (4-5) closed within 24-19 late, but a service error finished the Green and Gold's 25-19 set win.
The Tribe stayed close through the middle of the second set, getting kills from
Katherine Arnason and Westfort to move in front 11-10 and later a kill from
Emily McKee for a 12-11 edge. The Catamounts answered from there, moving ahead 17-14 and then stretching the margin late. W&M dropped the set 25-17.
The Green and Gold made its biggest response late in the third set, using a McKee kill, a Westfort block and a
Regan Hill service ace to move within 23-21 after trailing 21-15. The Catamounts answered with the final two points, both on Aiyana Harris kills, to take the set 25-21.
W&M carried a 22-18 lead late in the fourth set, with Westfort recording kills at 19-17, 21-17 and 22-18.
The Catamounts answered with five straight points to move ahead 23-22 before
Audrey Brcka's kill tied the set at 23. WCU took the final two points to close out the set, 25-23.
