BOONE, N.C. — William & Mary lost to App State 3-0 (18-25, 16-25, 19-25) on the opening day of the Mountaineer Classic Friday at the Holmes Convocation Center.
W&M (3-4) made a first-set push that put it ahead 9-6, with
Olivia Westfort tying the set on a kill before
Emily McKee added two kills around a
Katherine Arnason ace. The Mountaineers (4-4) answered after the Tribe moved back in front 10-9, scoring the next five points to take a 14-10 lead and later building a 19-11 margin.
Westfort added a late kill during a three-point W&M response, but the Mountaineers closed the set 25-18.
The Tribe traded points with the Mountaineers through the first half of the second set, getting kills from
Teagan Pocius, Arnason, McKee, Westfort and
Audrey Brcka while moving ahead 11-10.
However, the Mountaineers took control late, scoring seven straight points from 17-14 to 24-14 before the Tribe answered with a Brcka kill and a Mountaineers attack error. The Mountaineers closed the set at 25-16.
In the third set, the Tribe answered a 6-3 deficit with four straight service points on Arnason's serve, including consecutive Westfort kills, to move in front 7-6. A Westfort kill put W&M ahead 19-18 before the Mountaineers scored the final seven points to take the set 25-19.
