The U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field got off to a rainy start Friday, and two men with William and Mary ties took their shot at earning a trip to the London Olympics. Leading the way was
Christo Landry '08, who finished 17th in the 10,000m, while
Patrick Roach J.D. '12 bowed in the 800m quarterfinals.
Landry ran 28:35.46 in his Olympic Trials debut, and finished 17th to improve six places over his seed of 23rd. Landry, currently a volunteer assistant at Michigan, was a three-time All-American in cross country for W&M, including a 13th-place finish in 2007. In the past year, he's been on a tear in road races, taking second at both the 25K and 15K U.S. Championships, as well as fifth in the 10K road championships.
Earlier in the evening, Roach competed in the quarterfinals of the 800m, running 1:50.11 to finish seventh in his heat and 30th overall. Roach, a multiple-time All-American at D-III Messiah, broke the Colonial Relays record this spring in winning the 800m at Zable Stadium in 1:48.72.
The women's pole vault, originally scheduled to have prelims tonight, was washed out by heavy rains. All 24 competitors, including volunteer assistant
Janice Keppler, were advanced to Sunday's finals which will begin at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.
