The William and Mary men's track and field team completed a successful first day at the 47th Annual Colonial Relays Friday, standing 12th overall in the team race with 15 points. Michigan holds a slender lead over Bucknell and the rest of the 26 scoring teams, 88-79. Individually, the Tribe earned four IC4A qualifications on the day, and had a pair of performances land in the record books.
1,500m Run
In the 1,500m run, senior
Chris Tyson (Arlington, Va.) ran a lifetime-best 3:46.69 to finish fifth overall and qualify for the IC4A Championships. Tyson's time now ranks him 16th in school history in the event.
5,000m Run
In the 5,000m, both sophomores
Joshua Mercado (Citrus Heights, Calif.) and
Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) qualified for the IC4A Championships with top-25 finishes. Mercado ran a lifetime-best by more than 28 seconds, and placed 19th overall in a time of 14:22.49. Gunzenhausers' 14:26.51 was an all-time outdoor best, and was good for 23rd overall.
10,000m Run
Junior
Tyler Jones (Chalfont, Pa.) lead for the first half of the race in the 10,000m, and came in under the IC4A-qualifying barrier in 30:43.36. His time was good for eighth overall in the race, and two team points for W&M.
Long Jump
Earlier in the day, junior
Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) tied his outdoor-best in the long jump with a leap of 6.96 meters (22-10), and placed sixth in the championship section of the event to score three points. Katz is the 11th-ranked long-jumper outdoors in school history.
High Jump
Katz also competed in the championship section of the high jump, scoring five team points after he placed fourth with a height of 2.01m (6-7).
Overall Colonial Relays Notes
Including W&M's four IC4A marks, a total of 74 IC4A qualifying performances were turned in on Friday ... In the 5,000m run, Virginia's Sean Keveren ran 13:48.34 to win and qualify provisionally for the U.S. Olympic Trials ... In the trials of the 110m hurdles, Dominic Berger (adidas) ran 13.60 seconds to break the existing stadium and meet records ... His time was well under the provisional standards for both the Olympic Trials and the London Olympics, but the wind reading was a +3.4 and thus cannot be used to qualify ... The previous records in the 110m hurdles were 13.77 for the Colonial Relays (Rodney Wilson, Villanova, 1981) and 13.71 for Zable Stadium (Jerry Roney, James Madison, 1993 IC4A Championships) ... The meet record in the 800m run was also reset, with Patrick Roach's winning time of 1:48.72 ... The previous Colonial Relays standard for the 800m was 1:48.86 (Kraig Cesar, Unattached, 1991) ...
