The William and Mary men's track and field team wrapped up a successful qualifying weekend on Saturday, earning a pair of IC4A bids as the team split between three events. The Tribe had runners competing at the Mt. SAC Relays out in California, at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational, and at the New Captain's Classic at Christopher Newport. Unless otherwise noted, all performances were at CNU.
1,500m Run
The first of the College's two IC4A-qualifying performances came Friday night at Princeton, in the 1,500m run. Senior
Chris Tyson (Arlington, Va.) continued his spectacular final campaign with another lifetime-best performance, running 3:46.55 for 10th place overall. The time lowered his best by .14 seconds, and improved Tyson to 16th all-time at W&M.
Meanwhile, the Tribe had several more athletes compete Saturday at CNU in the 1,500m run.
Jack Anderson (Pfafftown, N.C.) placed second overall in 3:57.77, and
Zach Tennant (Fairview, W.Va.) was right on his heels in 3:57.82 for third.
Ted Richardson (Midlothian, Va.) was fourth in the race, crossing the finish in 4:01.29.
5,000m Run
Also at Princeton, sophomore
Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) lowered his personal-best in the 5,000m by 1.2 seconds down to 14:18.96. Gunzenhauser won his heat and placed 18th overall with the time, which also earned him a spot at the IC4A Championships.
High Jump
In the high jump, junior
Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) picked up another victory, this time with the bar's height at 2.00 meters (6-6.75). Katz is the defending CAA Champion, and has been the top-ranked jumper in the league all year in 2012.
Shot Put
Freshman
Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.) wasn't quite able to replicate his tremendous put from last week, but picked up the win in the shot put nonetheless. He heaved the 16-lbs shot out a distance of 15.18m (49-9.75) in earning his gold medal.
800m Run
After his third-place showing at 1,500m,
Zach Tennant did himself one better in the 800m by running a personal-best 1:55.44 for second place.
Long Jump
Ben Katz also earned a silver medal in the long jump, hitting 6.81m (22-4.25) twice in his first three attempts.
110m High Hurdles
Senior
Matt Clark (Richmond, Va.) was third in the 110m hurdles, clearing the course in the face of a strong headwind with a time of 15.86 seconds.
Discus
In the discus,
Brian Waterfield took fourth overall with a throw of 39.95m (131-1).
William and Mary is back in action next weekend, as select athletes head north for the world-famous Penn Relay Carnival.
