The William and Mary women's swimming team brought its dual-meet schedule to close on a high note Saturday afternoon, cruising past Mary Washington on the road 164-87. With the win, the Tribe finishes its 2011-12 ledge at 8-5 overall with the most wins in a year since going 10-2 in 2008-09.
200 Medley Relay
The Tribe won each of the first 11 events, beginning with a sweep of the 200 medley relay. The Tribe's winning team touched the wall in 1:46.78, and included
Gabrielle Mizerak (Manassas, Va.),
Emily Bart (Cherry Hill, N.J.),
Hailey Hewitt (Fairfax, Va.), and
Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.). Second went to the team of
Laura Matthews (Drexel Hill, Pa.),
Liz Collins (Alexandria, Va.),
Megan Howard (McLean, Va.), and
Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.), in a time of 1:49.48. The quartet of
Liz Glenn (Greenwood Village, Colo.),
Greta Schneider (Moorestown, N.J.),
Kayla O'Malley (Vienna, Va.), and
Gabby Famularo (Virginia Beach, Va.) was third, with an aggregate time of 1:52.62.
1000 Free
In the 1000 free, freshman
Brodde Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.) won her 15th race of the year and first of two on the day with a time of 10:27.71. Classmate
Rebecca Spicher (Chesapeake, Va.) was second in 10:43.30, and sophomore
Devin Henry (Roanoke, Va.) finished third in 11:00.99.
200 Free
Caylyn Tate (Sterling, Va.) continued her standout season with a win in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:55.81.
Laura Matthews finished second in 1:58.77, and
Gabby Famularo completed the sweep in 2:02.98.
100 Back
Senior
Kristin Fimian earned herself a win in the 100 back, timing 1:01.50 to pace the field in an unfamiliar event.
Megan Howard was close behind in 1:01.73 for second, and senior
Liza McDevitt (Jenkintown, Pa.) was fourth in 1:03.38.
100 Breast
Freshman record-holder
Liz Collins won the 100 breast in 1:08.57 to keep the gold flowing in the College's lanes, finishing ahead of
Sara Shaner in second (1:10.28). Fourth went to
Gabrielle Mizerak, who touched the wall in 1:12.28.
200 Fly
Senior
Molly Emery (Burke, Va.) won her team-leading 19th victory of the season in the 200 fly, timing an impressive 2:06.75. Her performance ranks her ninth all-time at the College in the event, and she now appears among the top-10 in 10 of the 14 individual swimming events in school history. The win was also the 60th of her career, making her just the sixth swimmer in school history to reach that plateau and the second this season alone (classmate
Hailey Hewitt began the year with 59, and now has 63). Also in the 200 fly, freshman
Emma Carpenter (Haddonfield, N.J.) was third in 2:19.14.
50 Free
Greta Schneider earned the first win of her collegiate career in the 50 free, out-touching
Emily Bart 25.61 to 25.67 for the victory. Freshman
Katie Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.) was fifth in the heat, timing 26.52.
100 Free
In the 100 free, senior
Kelly Fini (Manassas, Va.) was able to claim the first win of her career with a sprint down the final stretch to hold-off
Caylyn Tate, 55.35-55.80.
Katie Thomas was third, timing 57.06 seconds.
200 Back
Laura Matthews won the 200 back in 2:10.66, easily outdistancing the field to claim gold. Junior
Meghan Baker (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was second in 2:16.13, and
Emma Carpenter was fifth in 2:25.36.
200 Breast
Brodde Lamb's second win came in the 200 breast, where she finished in 2:26.79.
Molly Emery was right behind her in 2:28.26 for second, and
Devin Henry was fourth in 2:34.77.
500 Free
The Tribe's final contested event (before exhibitioning the final three) was the 500 free, where sophomore
Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) stopped the clock in 5:02.36 for the win.
Hailey Hewitt was second in 5:11.65, and
Liz Glenn completed the sweep in 5:17.17 for third.
With the dual-meet season now complete, William and Mary will turn its attention to the CAA Championships coming up in three weeks at George Mason. Those athletes who don't make the championship roster will compete next weekend, Feb. 10-11, at the Terp Invite at Maryland.
