WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William
and Mary women's soccer senior midfielder Mallory Schaffer was named a second-team
All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Friday. The reining Colonial Athletic Association
Player of the Year earns the distinction for the second consecutive season, as
she took home first-team accolades last year.
Furthermore, Schaffer becomes W&M's 29th NSCAA All-American and the
ninth player to garner consecutive distinctions.
"Mallory's contributions to W&M women's soccer haven
been immense," stated head coach John Daly. "She contributed significantly as a
captain and leader. Mallory's very
deserving of the honors she has received."
In addition to earning NSCAA All-America accolades, Schaffer
was named to the Senior Class All-America Second-Team on Friday afternoon. Earlier this season, Schaffer was named as
one of 10 national finalists for the Senior Class Award, which recognizes the
Division I women's soccer player who defines the meaning of success on and off
the field.
The Senior Class Award, chosen by a
nationwide vote of Division I women's soccer coaches, national soccer media and
fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in
Division I women's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must
be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in
four areas of excellence - classroom, community, character and competition.
After an exceptional 2012 season on the pitch, the Allison
Park, Pa., native became just the third player in CAA history to repeat as the
conference player of the year. She
joined former W&M standouts Missy Wycinski '99 and Claire Zimmeck
'08 as the only players to accomplish the feat.
Despite consistently drawing the
oppositions' best efforts defensively, Schaffer shined in 2012 as she ranked
third in the CAA in points (23) and goals (10). Her finest moment of the
season occurred in the Green and Gold's pivotal match against Hofstra on Oct.
21. Down 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining and with the league
regular season title on the line, Schaffer netted the equalizer, to send the
contest into overtime and helped helping the College defeat Hofstra, 3-2.
Off the pitch, the accolades
accumulated for the All-American this season. Before the start of the
season, Schaffer was named to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Award Watch List for
the second consecutive year. On Sept. 3,
she was named the CAA player of the week and earned a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week after scoring two
goals and registering an assist against Richmond and Auburn.
A two-time All-America and three-time
All-CAA First-Team honoree, Schaffer finished her impressive career netting 41
goals and 96 points, which rank sixth and seventh, respectively, all-time in
school history.
