ATLANTA, Ga. - The
William and Mary women's soccer team continued its winning ways Sunday afternoon
defeating Georgia State, 2-1 from the Georgia State Soccer Field. Freshman Barbara Platenberg netted a pair of
goals, the first of her career, which included the game-winner in the 57th
minute. The victory is W&M's fifth
consecutive as it improves its record to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in CAA play,
while GSU falls to 4-8-1 on the year and 1-5 in league action.
"We took a long while to get started," stated head coach
John Daly. "We conceded another corner kick which was disappointing.
Fortunately, we equalized soon after when Cortlyn (Bristol) assisted Barbara
(Platenberg) coming in on the far post. We scored fairly early in the second
half when Barbara pounced on a clearance, which proved to be the difference."
In a defensive minded first half, the Tribe's backline
asserted its presence early as it held Georgia State shot less for the opening
39 minutes. However, GSU managed to
break-through after senior Carly Lafferty headed in the afternoon's initial goal
in the 41st minute. Moments later, the
College poured on the attack which resulted in freshman Barbara Platenberg's
first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute.
The equalizer culminated after Platenberg punched home senior Cortlyn Bristol's first attempt on frame.
Bristol was credited with the assist, which marked her 10th of the
season and 25th career. For the half,
the College attempted five shots with three coming on frame, while GSU
registered three attempts, which included one on goal.
After withstanding a pair of Georgia State attacks to start
the second-half, the Green and Gold countered with the difference maker in the
57th minute. A nice tactical charge was
highlighted by Platenberg's second goal of the afternoon. Initially, Bristol sent a pass to
senior Mallory Schaffer, who then sent a deflected touch to Platenberg, who corralled
and finished the pass in the upper left corner of goal, giving W&M the final margin. Freshman keeper Caroline Casey played all 90 minutes between
the posts and finished the afternoon with two saves.
For the match, W&M held the advantage in shots, 13-6,
while the Panthers held a slight edge in shots on goal, 5-4. The College improved its all-time record
against Georgia State to 6-2.
The College returns to the pitch at Delaware on Friday, Oct.
12, at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the
