The William and Mary women's swimming team said farewell to its six seniors in style on Saturday afternoon, beating Delaware decisively 177-85 with wins in 11 of 14 events. The Tribe improves to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win, while the Blue Hens fall to 6-4, 2-4 in the league.
200 Medley Relay
The victories began in earnest from the get-go, with the team of senior
Hailey Hewitt (Fairfax, Va.),
Emily Bart (Cherry Hill, N.J.),
Gabrielle Mizerak (Manassas, Va.), and
Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) timing 1:46.60 for the win. The second quartet, consisting of
Liz Glenn (Greenwood Village, Colo.), senior
Liza McDevitt (Jenkintown, Pa.),
Brodde Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.), and senior
Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.), touched the last wall in 1:48.76 to take third overall.
1000 Free
In the 1000 free,
Caylyn Tate (Sterling, Va.) won her 10th race of the year with a 10:25.83 performance, leading a sweep of the top three spots. Senior
Molly Emery (Burke, Va.) was second in 10:32.01, and
Meghan Baker (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was third in 10:34.26.
200 Free
In the 200 free,
Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) powered down the center lane to take the win in 1:54.61.
Gabrielle Mizerak, two lanes over, finished second in 1:55.74.
100 Back
Freshman
Liz Glenn kept the gold flowing with her top showing in the 100 back with a time of 57.71 seconds, while senior
Laura Matthews (Drexel Hill, Pa.) was third in 59.54 seconds.
50 Free
Sara Shaner got to the top of the podium in the 50 free, coming in half a second clear of the field in 24.10 seconds. Freshman
Megan Howard (McLean, Va.) was second in 24.61, and
Kristin Fimian completed the sweep with her third-place 24.84.
100 Free
After the first intermission, it was
Molly Emery taking the win in the 100 free as the Tribe earned yet another sweep. The senior touched the wall in 52.37 seconds, and was followed by
Sara Shaner in 52.89 and
Megan Howard in 53.50 seconds.
200 Back
Liz Glenn took her second win of the day and unified the two backstroke titles after a dominating six-second victory in the 200 back. Glenn timed 2:03.45, with fellow newcomer
Katie Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.) second in 2:09.21 and junior
Kayla O'Malley (Vienna, Va.) finished fifth in 2:12.61.
500 Free
Caylyn Tate joined the ranks of double-winners with her 5:06.94 turn in the 500 free, and was followed across the line by
Jen Bentley in second (5:08.41) and
Meghan Baker in third (5:12.03).
100 Fly
One event later,
Molly Emery was yet another two-gold winner with her top time of 57.77 seconds. Classmate
Hailey Hewitt was second in 58.10 seconds, with
Gabrielle Mizerak right behind her in 58.16 for third.
400 IM
Brodde Lamb nearly had the day's only pool record in the 400 IM, coming just .01 seconds from matching the best time ever in the Rec Center Pool. The freshman's 14th win of the season came in 4:30.79.
Devin Henry (Roanoke, Va.) was fourth in 4:37.80, and freshman
Rebecca Spicher (Chesapeake, Va.) took fifth in 4:38.89.
400 Free Relay
With the meet well in hand, the Tribe showed no signs of let-up heading into the last event, the 400 free relay. W&M went 1-2 in the race, led by the 3:31.81 win of the quartet of
Gabrielle Mizerak,
Sara Shaner,
Molly Emery, and
Liza McDevitt. Second went to senior
Kelly Fini (Manassas, Va.),
Megan Howard,
Jen Bentley, and
Hailey Hewitt, who's aggregate time was 3:35.43.
100 Breast
In the 100 breast,
Liza McDevitt timed 1:06.68 to take the silver medal.
Emily Bart was right behind her in third, finishing the course in 1:07.35.
200 Fly
Hailey Hewitt was also a bronze-medalist in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 2:08.25.
Brodde Lamb was fifth in the race, timing 2:10.77.
200 Breast
It was
Emily Bart's turn for silver in the 200 breast, where she timed 2:23.93 for the second-place showing. Third went to freshman
Liz Collins (Alexandria, Va.), with a time of 2:28.22.
William and Mary heads to Fredericksburg, Virginia, next weekend to bring the dual-meet season to a close against Mary Washington.
