The William and Mary men's swimming team turned in one of its best performances in years at East Carolina on Saturday, winning seven events before falling to the Pirates 165.5-122.5. Taking out the 26 points ECU earned in diving, the score was even closer, a miniscule 17-point difference (139.5-122.5).
1000 Free
The Tribe's first win came in the 1,000 free, where freshman
Lukas Dempsey (New Paltz, N.Y.) swam a collegiate-best 9:42.04 to claim victory. Dempsey moves up to eighth all-time at the College with his performance. Classmate
Kemp Pettyjohn (Lynchburg, Va.) was second in 9:45.97, and
Kyle McVeigh (Jacksonville, Fla.) was fifth in 10:09.84.
100 Back
Next to win was junior
Sidney Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.) in the 100 back, after he touched the wall in 51.87 seconds.
Evan Rutherford (Newport News, Va.) was third in 53.78, just ahead of
Jake Maloy (Culpeper, Va.) in 53.87.
200 Fly
Senior
Evan Mulloy (Martinez, Ga.) won his eighth race of the year in the 200 fly, timing 1:53.72 for the win.
K.J. Shaw (Richmond, Va.) was fourth overall, stopping the clock in 1:58.08.
50 Free
Sophomore
Andrew Strait (Henrico, Va.) won the first of his two events in the 50 free, timing 21.38 seconds for his 10th win of the season. Junior
Ben Ward (Maitland, Fla.) was third in 21.54 seconds.
500 Free
In the 500 free,
Kemp Pettyjohn and
Lukas Dempsey reversed their finish from earlier in the meet with the Virginian taking the win in 4:42.71. Dempsey's runner-up time was 4:44.76.
100 Fly
Andrew Strait's second win was in the 100 fly, where he hit the pad in 51.04 seconds to out-distance the field.
Evan Mulloy was third in 51.91, and
K.J. Shaw fifth in 53.41 seconds.
200 Free Relay
The seventh win in 14 swimming events for W&M came in the 200 free relay, as the team of
Ben Ward,
Hunter Perrot (Falls Church, Va.),
Sidney Glass, and
Stephen Fay (Herndon, Va.) combined to time 1:24.77.
400 Medley Relay
The Tribe also took a second place in the 400 medley relay that kicked off the meet, with the team of
Sidney Glass,
Andrew Strait,
Evan Mulloy, and
Stephen Fay combining to time 3:25.44.
100 Free
In the 200 free,
Stephen Fay was second overall in 47.37 seconds, and
Hunter Perrot was fourth in 47.94.
200 Back
Evan Rutherford claimed a silver medal of his own in the 200 back, touching the wall in 1:54.04.
Sidney Glass was third in 1:54.80, and
Chad Nowakowski (Forest, Va.) rounded out the top five in 1:58.29.
200 Breast
In the 200 breaststroke, freshman
Chris Dong (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was second in 2:08.92. Classmate
Carter Head (Lynchburg, Va.) took fourth overall, timing 2:11.67.
100 Breast
Chris Dong also earned a bronze medal in the 100 breast, timing 59.25 to lead the Tribe once again.
Ben Ward was fifth in the event, touching the wall in 59.76 seconds.
200 IM
Evan Mulloy was third in the 200 IM, well under the 2-minute mark in 1:59.07.
K.J. Shaw was fifth, in 2:01.76
200 Free
The final top-five performance of the afternoon for W&M was in the 200 free, where
Hunter Perrot was fourth in 1:44.52.
William and Mary returns to Williamsburg next Saturday, January 28, for the final home meet of the year. The Tribe will honor its five seniors at 11 a.m., before taking on the Delaware Blue Hens in the Rec Center Pool.
