Facing one of the top teams in the ACC, the William and Mary women's swimming team won four events and set a pair of pool records before falling to Virginia Tech, 148-111. The two teams wowed the capacity crowd with a total of five pool records in the 14 events competed.
1,650 Free
The Tribe's first win, and first record, came in the 1,650 freestyle. Junior
Caylyn Tate (Sterling, Va.) raced Tech's top swimmer neck-and-neck for much of the race before taking control with a quarter-mile left to go. She continued to pull away as the race continued, winning in 17:12.35, nearly six full seconds ahead of the old pool record set by Richmond's Caitlin Geary in 2005 (17:18.33).
200 Back
Senior
Hailey Hewitt (Fairfax, Va.) broke her own pool record from one year ago in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:02.16 to shave a quarter-second off of the old mark. Freshman
Liz Glenn (Greenwood Village, Colo.) was second overall, timing 2:02.64, and classmate
Katie Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the top five in 2:09.14.
200 Free
Also taking first place on the afternoon was senior
Molly Emery (Burke, Va.), who collected her team-leading 13th win with a 1:52.27 showing in the 200 free.
Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) was fifth in the event, timing 1:55.60.
200 IM
The fourth victory came in the 200 IM, where
Brodde Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.) swam 2:08.47 for her 10th win of the season. Senior
Laura Matthews (Drexel Hill, Pa.) was second in 2:11.63, and
Devin Henry (Roanoke, Va.) was third in 2:12.64. Junior
Emily Bart (Cherry Hill, N.J.) rounded out the team's efforts in the race, taking fourth in 2:13.47.
200 Medley Relay
The Tribe also earned at least a silver medal in eight more events, beginning with the 200 medley relay. The team of
Molly Emery,
Liz Collins (Alexandria, Va.),
Gabrielle Mizerak (Manassas, Va.), and
Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) combined to time 1:46.51 and take second overall. Right behind them in 1:47.56 was the quartet of
Liz Glenn,
Emily Bart,
Hailey Hewitt, and
Megan Howard (McLean, Va.).
100 Back
In the 100 back,
Liz Glenn was the top Tribe athlete in 57.78 seconds to take second place.
Laura Matthews was fourth in 59.49, and
Sammie Cooper (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) rounded out the top five in 59.76 seconds.
200 Fly
Hailey Hewitt took second in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 2:08.47 just ahead of
Brodde Lamb in 2:08.50.
50 Free
Silver in the 50 free went to the freshman,
Megan Howard, who timed 24.26 seconds.
Sara Shaner was fourth in 24.53 seconds, and senior
Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.) took fifth overall in 24.84.
100 Free
After the first intermission,
Molly Emery took second in the 100 free with a time of 52.43 seconds.
Sara Shaner placed fourth for the second event in a row, with a time of 53.20.
200 Breast
Emily Bart touched the wall in 2:22.60 for the 200 breaststroke for her silver medal, while
Laura Matthews once again finished among the top five with her fifth-place 2:28.19.
100 Fly
Gabrielle Mizerak led three Tribe athletes in the top five of the 100 fly, timing 57.95 for second overall.
Megan Howard was third in 58.08, and
Kristin Fimian took fifth in 59.35 seconds.
400 Free Relay
The final silver medal came in the 400 free relay, as the team of
Gabrielle Mizerak,
Sara Shaner,
Hailey Hewitt, and
Molly Emery combined to time 3:30.66.
100 Breast
In the 100 breast,
Emily Bart took third place with her time of 1:06.89. Senior
Liza McDevitt (Jenkintown, Pa.) was fourth in 1:06.98, and
Liz Collins was fifth in 1:08.65.
500 Free
W&M also earned a bronze in the 500 free, courtesy of
Jen Bentley's 5:06.54 performance.
Caylyn Tate was fourth in the race, touching the wall in 5:07.41.
William and Mary is back in action next weekend, on Saturday, January 21, as the Tribe travels to East Carolina to take on the Pirates and Campbell University. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
